Why Gachagua Lacked Police Protection at the Chaotic Mwiki Church Event – DCI Responds
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has finally spoken out about the chaotic scenes witnessed during a church service in Mwiki on Sunday, March 6, which was attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a detailed statement released on Monday, April 7, the DCI offered a version of events that contradicted earlier claims by Gachagua.
The former DP had criticized the country’s security agencies, accusing them of deliberately ignoring their responsibility to provide him with security during public events. However, the DCI gave a different explanation.
According to the DCI, the commotion at the PCEA church in Mwiki occurred partly because the church organizers failed to inform the police beforehand about the presence of high-ranking political figures at the event.
The police command in Mwiki stated that without such notification, they had no opportunity to plan and deploy officers for security in advance.
“The Mwiki police command indicated that the church did not notify law enforcement about the event, which included political leaders.
As a result, no special security arrangements were put in place to handle any incidents,” read part of the DCI’s statement.
Despite the lack of advance notice, the DCI confirmed that they had begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the disturbance and the motivations behind it.
They are working to uncover who was responsible for the chaos and what led to the violent scenes at the church.
The DCI also acknowledged that hired goons were present at the church event. They reported that local authorities observed a crowd arriving at the scene on more than 100 motorcycles, carrying people suspected to have been mobilized to cause disruptions.
As tensions escalated, police officers stationed at Mwiki Police Station heard gunfire coming from the church grounds. In response, they were quickly dispatched to the scene.
The DCI explained that these officers were able to drive the attackers away, restoring calm to the area.
Following the confrontation, several suspects were arrested, and at least 10 motorcycles were left behind and taken into custody at the Mwiki station.
Interestingly, the DCI clarified that the gunshots heard during the disturbance were fired by members of Gachagua’s personal security team, who acted to protect him and others in attendance from the violent group.
Following the incident, Gachagua strongly blamed allies of President William Ruto and accused Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of being behind the attack.
He said that political rivalries should not be brought into religious settings, especially places of worship.
So far, neither President Ruto nor Governor Sakaja has publicly addressed or responded to these serious allegations.
“My President, what happened to you? Even in a church? This is a new low. You sent goons to Limuru last week, then to Nyeri, and now to a church. You have become bold,” Gachagua said emotionally during his speech at the church on Sunday.
He went on to accuse the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service of receiving direct orders to deny him police protection at any public event he attends.
In conclusion, the DCI warned the public to maintain peace and order, especially during community events and gatherings.
They stressed that violence and politically motivated disruptions will not be tolerated, and those found guilty of causing chaos will face the full force of the law.
