Following Lee Kinyanjui’s appointment as the new Cabinet Secretary for Trade, the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, has officially confirmed leadership changes within the Ubuntu Peoples Forum (UPF) party.
This confirmation marks Kinyanjui’s removal from the party’s leadership, as he transitions into his new government role.
According to a gazette notice issued by Nderitu, the leadership of UPF has been restructured. Samuel Kinya Rukahu has been announced as the new Party Leader and will now be responsible for guiding the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Erick Mburu Murage will continue in his role as the Deputy Party Leader, overseeing Finance and National Coordination.
David Ngugi Mwaniki remains the National Vice-Chairperson in charge of Operations. He will be working alongside Abdulahi Adan Mohammed and Murguya Wilson, who will both retain their positions as National Vice-Chairpersons.
In another significant appointment, Beatrice Nyawira Wambugu has been named the new Secretary General, taking over from Samuel Kinya Rukahu.
She will now play a central role in steering the party into the next political phase leading up to the elections.
Additionally, Peter Owour Onyango has been appointed as the new Deputy Secretary General, replacing Janniffer Wambui Mwangi.
The party has also introduced several other changes in its national structure, including updates to the positions of National Organizing Secretary, Director of Elections, and various other key national roles.
Registrar Nderitu has invited the public to submit any objections to these changes within seven days of the notice’s publication.
“Any individual who has written submissions or objections concerning the proposed leadership changes by the political party should submit them to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties within seven (7) days from the date of this announcement,” the notice stated.
Lee Kinyanjui’s exit from UPF followed his nomination by President William Ruto to join the Cabinet as the Trade CS. During the vetting process by Members of Parliament, Lee stated that he had officially resigned from the party immediately after being nominated.
“I have stepped down from the Ubuntu party, although I still strongly connect with its core values and philosophy of ‘I am because you are,’” he shared with the lawmakers.
Kinyanjui and his political associates were instrumental in establishing the Ubuntu Peoples Forum (UPF) around 2021, after they took over and rebranded the Citizens Convention Party.
In December 2021, Kinyanjui formally aligned himself with the UPF, presenting it as a movement focused on promoting values of unity, humanity, and shared purpose.
