Senator Calls for Impeachment of Governor Natembeya

Senator Cherargei Demands Impeachment of Governor Natembeya Over Tribal Allegations

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has maintained his hard stance against Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, accusing him of being a tribalist.

In his latest statement, the senator strongly criticized the governor and even called for his impeachment, claiming that Natembeya has failed in his leadership duties.

Cherargei made these remarks in response to a section of Trans Nzoia residents who had come out in strong defence of their governor.

He accused Natembeya of promoting tribal division, fueling tension, and failing in matters of development. He also cited corruption allegations as part of the reasons why the governor should be removed from office.

“Governor Natembeya should be impeached for encouraging tribal hatred, causing divisions among communities, failing to develop the county properly, and facing corruption claims.

These are serious issues that go against the Constitution of Kenya 2010, especially Articles 10, 27, 73, 74, 75, and 174,” Senator Cherargei stated firmly.

He went on to say that Natembeya is unfit to lead the county and instead accused him of using tribal politics to push his agenda.

“He is not suitable to be the Governor of Trans Nzoia County but fits the role of a tribal chief mobiliser who spreads tribal propaganda,” he added.

However, on Monday afternoon, residents from Trans Nzoia County responded with a united voice, defending their governor and rejecting the idea of an outsider interfering with their local politics.

They made it clear that decisions about their leadership would not be dictated by leaders who do not belong to their county.

“We do not want politicians from other counties telling us how to run our affairs in Trans Nzoia. If you do not vote here or serve as an MCA in this county, then you have no authority to demand that we impeach our governor,” one resident voiced during a gathering.

He further pointed out that Cherargei’s move in the Senate to push for impeachment would not succeed.

Another resident noted that the people of the larger Western Kenya region — including Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Trans Nzoia — have come together to defend Natembeya.

Their goal, he said, is to ensure they speak with one voice at the national level.

“Natembeya is not just working for Trans Nzoia; he is representing the entire Luhya community.

He is playing a key role in uniting all the Western Kenya counties to boost our chances of getting a share of power in national politics. That is what some people fear — our unity and influence,” the resident explained.

Governor Natembeya, who rose to prominence during his time as a Regional Police Commissioner, has remained a controversial figure, especially due to his open criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government. His bold stand against the government has not gone unnoticed.

Earlier this year, during the burial of the late mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Natembeya openly challenged President William Ruto to address the issue of forced disappearances in the country. This move attracted harsh criticism from Kenya Kwanza leaders.

Shortly after his comments, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah accused the governor of promoting ethnic division in the Western region through provocative statements.

Following these incidents, Natembeya has claimed that his convoy has been attacked multiple times. According to him, these attacks are politically motivated and aimed at silencing him for speaking out on sensitive issues.

The political tension between the senator and the governor continues to raise temperatures in the Western region as calls for unity clash with accusations of tribal politics.

Whether the impeachment push gains ground remains to be seen, but for now, Natembeya enjoys solid support from residents and leaders across Western Kenya.
