Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked political debate after revealing that a powerful new alliance could be forming to challenge President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Speaking during a burial ceremony for Reverend Joseph Nzola in Machakos on Tuesday, April 15, Gachagua hinted at an emerging coalition involving himself, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i (now the Jubilee presidential candidate), Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
He stated that they had paid attention to the voices of Kenyans and were working behind the scenes to create a strong coalition that could steer the country in a new direction.
“We’ve been listening to what Kenyans want. The people have asked us to unite and build a government that will bring meaningful change and move the country forward.
That’s exactly what we are planning. Myself, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i are already working on this plan – we are in the kitchen, preparing something big,” Gachagua said.
He also reassured residents of Ukambani that Kalonzo Musyoka would play a key role in the formation of this alliance, saying, “Let me tell the people of Ukambani, Kalonzo is a major player in this agreement. His contribution is central to what we are building.”
At the same time, Gachagua warned of possible schemes by the current government to weaken or divide the opposition early, ahead of the elections.
However, he was firm that opposition leaders will not fall for any tricks meant to break their unity.
“They want to break us up and create divisions before the elections. But I want to assure Kenyans that we are not fools. We are going to remain united and silent until the right time.
We will not reveal our presidential candidate until December 2026, just before the elections,” he declared.
Since leaving office, Gachagua has turned into a fierce critic of President Ruto’s administration. He has openly vowed to ensure that Ruto does not win a second term.
However, Gachagua’s political journey has not been smooth. He has faced several challenges during his public engagements, including incidents where his vehicles were damaged and his rallies disrupted.
The former DP has aligned himself with other opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and even Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party.
All of them have had political differences with Raila Odinga, signaling the potential for a major political shift ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, Fred Matiang’i, who served in Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has been officially endorsed by the Jubilee Party as its presidential flagbearer for the next election.
The party, once dominant, is now positioning itself as a key player in the opposition camp.
Despite this unity talk, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni expressed caution about forming alliances. He warned that such coalitions often risk collapsing or being infiltrated by pro-government forces.
Still, Kioni agreed that all leaders opposing President Ruto share a common goal – to remove him from power in the next elections.
President Ruto, on his part, has dismissed these alliance talks, confidently stating that he is fully prepared for the 2027 elections and determined to win a second term, regardless of the opposition’s plans.
