Loima Residents Protest Against UDA MP Protus Akuja Over Alleged Mismanagement
Chaos erupted in Loima Constituency as hundreds of angry residents stormed the NG-CDF offices in protest against their UDA Member of Parliament, Protus Akuja.
The protesters, who carried tree branches and placards with bold messages calling for the MP’s removal, accused him of corruption, nepotism, and a lack of transparency in managing the constituency’s development resources.
Chanting slogans like “Akuja Must Go,” the crowd peacefully marched to the offices, demanding immediate action against the MP.
They expressed deep disappointment and frustration, saying they no longer trust his leadership.
The residents claimed that Akuja has failed to fairly distribute tenders, job opportunities, and bursaries under the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
One frustrated resident said, “We are tired of Akuja. Other constituencies are benefiting from CDF money, but here we have nothing to show. We don’t see the MP around, and nothing is happening in terms of development.”
Several residents accused the MP of awarding fake road construction tenders to his family members and claimed the bursaries are also being given to his relatives or close associates.
Another protester added, “He keeps talking about the KeRRA road project, but we haven’t seen any work being done.
If the project exists, then it’s only within his family circle. Every single person managing CDF funds is related to him.”
The residents went on to say that many children in the area have dropped out of school due to lack of bursary support. They also revealed that some schools in the constituency have closed down because of insufficient funding.
In response to the protests, MP Akuja dismissed them as politically motivated. He claimed that the demonstrations were not a true reflection of the people’s concerns but were orchestrated by political opponents from the county government.
“Let me be clear, this was not a spontaneous protest. It was planned by individuals within the county government to tarnish my name and shift focus from investigations they are facing,” Akuja said.
He also suggested that the protest was a deliberate move to create a false impression that he was behind a probe by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), thereby stirring public resentment against him.
Notably, MP Akuja has been criticized for being among the least active lawmakers in the National Assembly.
According to Mzalendo, a watchdog group that monitors parliamentary performance, Akuja is listed among 19 MPs who have not made any contributions to parliamentary debates in 2024.
These protests come at a time when there is growing national debate over the management of NG-CDF funds.
Many are calling for the funds to be placed under the control of the national government in order to improve accountability and reduce cases of alleged misuse.
