Over 100 Churchgoers Hospitalised After Eating Contaminated Meat in Kirinyaga
More than 100 members of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) in Mukanduini, Kirinyaga County, have been rushed to hospitals after consuming contaminated beef during an Easter Sunday church celebration.
According to reports, the worshippers began experiencing signs of food poisoning shortly after eating the meat, which had been prepared from a bull slaughtered for the event.
The symptoms included severe diarrhoea, vomiting, headaches, and joint pain. Many of the affected individuals are now receiving medical care in various health facilities, both public and private, located in Kagio and Kerugoya areas.
One of the affected church members shared their experience, saying, “Some people were taken to Kerugoya General Hospital, others to Kwanyaga and some to Kwagaku.
The bull that was slaughtered appeared healthy and showed no visible signs of sickness. In fact, a doctor examined it before we ate, and no issues were found at that time.”
Another victim added, “We ate the beef on Sunday, but once we got home, we started feeling unwell. I had stomach pains and diarrhoea.
I went to Kerugoya Hospital with three members of my family, and we were all treated. Thankfully, I have recovered, but others are still unwell.”
This recent incident comes only a few months after a similar case in Kericho, where 73 people were hospitalised after drinking sour milk, popularly known as Mursik, during a graduation celebration held at a church.
In that case, the affected individuals, including many children and elderly people, were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital after developing signs of food poisoning.
A nurse who treated the victims in Kericho said, “Most of those affected were women, elderly men and women, and young children. This isn’t the first time we’ve handled such a case. We’ve dealt with a similar food poisoning outbreak before.”
One of the victims also confirmed this, saying, “The old people and young children were the ones who suffered the most. It was a very sad experience for us all.”
Sadly, these are not isolated events. Over the years, several similar food poisoning incidents have occurred in various parts of Kenya, including those linked to church functions and other social gatherings.
These unfortunate events highlight the urgent need for stricter food safety measures during community events to protect the health of attendees.
