Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has spoken out about the real reason he was removed from his position as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking during a Thursday morning interview on Spice FM, Malala revealed that his dismissal stemmed from a serious disagreement with President William Ruto.
According to Malala, the fallout with the Head of State began after he refused to support a move to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
He explained that he was pressured to sign off on Gachagua’s impeachment but declined because he believed that removing Gachagua would cause instability within the Kenya Kwanza government.
Malala said President Ruto was not pleased with his decision and went ahead to suggest changes in the party’s leadership.
These changes included a proposal to appoint two deputy party leaders—something Malala strongly opposed.
He warned the President that having two deputies would weaken UDA’s unity and leadership structure.
“I told the President that impeaching Gachagua would damage our administration and create chaos within the party. He saw my advice as betrayal.
After that, I was told to sign the impeachment document,” Malala said during the interview.
He further explained, “They suggested having two deputy leaders to take over easily if Gachagua was removed.
I cautioned that this would only divide the party more. But they didn’t listen, and eventually, I was pushed out.”
Malala said his refusal to back the impeachment led to him being branded a mole within the government. He believes that his stance was misunderstood and misrepresented as being disloyal to the ruling coalition.
In the same interview, Malala also criticized President Ruto for allegedly targeting students from Butere Girls High School over their controversial drama performance titled Echoes of War.
He claimed that it was the President himself who ordered the students to be stopped from performing at the national level.
According to Malala, Ruto is acting out of fear and insecurity. “The President is acting blindly. He’s paranoid because he knows the things he’s done, the things he’s doing now, and what he plans to do next,” Malala stated.
He defended the Butere Girls’ play, saying the content did not match the accusations made against it. “The President claimed the play included characters like paedophiles and drug dealers.
That was false. There was nothing like that in the drama. His remarks were not in any way connected to the actual message of the play,” he said.
Malala’s revelations paint a picture of deep internal conflict within the UDA party and raise more questions about the leadership dynamics in the Kenya Kwanza government.
