Former President Uhuru Kenyatta recently shared a surprising and humorous moment he once had with Pope Francis, where the Pope unintentionally ended up kicking him out of his own office.
Uhuru was speaking on Friday, April 25, during a requiem mass held at Holy Family Basilica. While addressing the congregation, he opened up about a past encounter with the late Pope Francis that left a lasting impression on him.
According to the former President, the incident happened after he had concluded a private one-on-one meeting with the Pope.
Uhuru explained that before the meeting, someone—whose identity he chose not to reveal—had approached him requesting a brief audience with the Pope.
As Head of State at the time, Uhuru agreed to the request, allowing the individual to join them once his official discussion with Pope Francis was done.
“In diplomatic protocol, whenever a Head of State visits another, it is customary to have a private session before any public engagements.
So, after my meeting with the Pope ended, I invited the individual who had earlier asked to see him,” Uhuru recounted.
He said the moment the guest joined the room, the three of them sat silently for a while. That’s when Pope Francis turned to Uhuru and made a light but unexpected comment.
“His Holiness looked at me and said, ‘I thought you said he wanted to talk to me,’” Uhuru narrated, drawing laughter from the audience.
The former President then added, “That was the first and only time, as the sitting President of Kenya, that I was actually thrown out of my own office. And to make it more memorable, it happened at the hands of another Head of State. It was both surprising and funny.”
Uhuru shared the story to highlight the Pope’s straightforward nature and unique sense of humor, describing the moment as one of the most unforgettable encounters during his presidency.
