The education sector in Kenya is mourning the death of former Maseno School Chief Principal, Paul Otula, who passed away on Thursday, May 1.
According to reports, Otula collapsed at his home in Nairobi and died shortly after. It is suspected that he suffered a cardiac arrest. His body has since been moved to Lee Funeral Home as the family and close friends come to terms with the sudden loss.
Otula was a respected and celebrated figure in Kenya’s education circles. He had an illustrious career as a teacher and school administrator, serving in some of the top-performing schools in the country.
He began his journey in education as a classroom teacher and basketball coach at Mang’u High School back in 1998.
Through hard work and dedication, he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Principal and eventually the Principal.
In 2001, he was appointed the Principal of Maseno School, succeeding Walter Okumu Amadi. During his leadership, Maseno School experienced remarkable success both academically and in sports.
The school’s rugby team went on to represent Kenya in the prestigious Dubai Sevens tournament, while the basketball team, under his guidance, clinched victory at the Engen Africa Youth Basketball Championships in South Africa in 2003.
His tenure at Maseno came to an end in 2017 after he was interdicted following allegations of misconduct. Despite this, Otula remained active in the education sector. In 2018, he took over as Principal of Sunshine Secondary School in Nairobi, where he served until 2021.
That year, he stepped down from his role to pursue a career in politics, contesting for the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat during the 2022 General Elections. Unfortunately, he was not successful in his political bid.
Outside the classroom, Otula made a big name for himself in the sports world, particularly in basketball. His tall frame gave him a natural advantage on the court, which he used to great effect both as a player and coach.
He served as a basketball coach for many years and mentored countless young players. In 2008, he was elected Chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), a role he held for several terms.
He also held a position on the executive board of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) up until his death.
News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes from former students, athletes, colleagues, and friends.
Many took to social media to share their memories of Otula, describing him as a tough but caring mentor who pushed them to become better both on and off the court.
“I’m proud to be among those who went to battle under your leadership. You pushed us beyond our limits, whether it was in class or on the court.
You will always be in our hearts,” wrote Athman Omar, one of the many basketball players Otula coached over the years.
Paul Otula leaves behind a rich legacy in both education and sports, having shaped the lives of many young Kenyans across the country. His death is a huge loss to the education and sporting community in Kenya.
