Outrage After Govt Vehicle Runs Over Bodaboda Rider Twice

There was chaos in Kilgoris town on Thursday, May 1, after angry boda boda riders poured into the streets to demonstrate the death of one of their fellow riders.

The deceased was allegedly run over not once but twice by a vehicle believed to be driven by a General Service Unit (GSU) officer.

The situation quickly became tense as furious riders blocked the Kilgoris-Nyanguso road, lit bonfires, and completely brought business activities to a halt.

They insisted that justice must be served, refusing to clear the road or calm down until the government responded to their demands.

According to the eyewitness accounts from the boda boda community, the incident was not accidental.

They claim that after the officer knocked down the rider, he reversed the vehicle and ran over him again — an act they described as intentional and brutal.

“Yesterday, one of our colleagues was knocked down right here by a GSU cruiser. The vehicle hit him, then reversed and crushed him again.

The officer didn’t stop. He sped away like nothing had happened,” said Bahati Kagia, a visibly shaken rider who was among the protestors.

The boda boda operators expressed deep frustration, saying this was not the first time a similar incident had occurred in the area.

They stated this was the third such case involving government officers, and they accused the authorities of constantly covering up these deaths simply because police officers or government drivers were involved.

“When one of us accidentally brushes a private car, it immediately becomes a police matter, and we are harassed.

But when a government vehicle runs over someone and kills them, nothing happens. The case is ignored, and life goes on as if nothing happened,” lamented Kelvin Leiyan, another protestor.

“How many times are we expected to stay silent? This is the third incident. Enough is enough. We are tired,” Leiyan added, his voice filled with emotion and anger.

The situation got out of control, and police had to step in to disperse the angry crowd. Despite the police efforts, the protestors stood their ground, swearing not to stop until real action was taken and those responsible were held accountable.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident in Kenya. The number of fatal accidents involving government vehicles has been increasing. In March alone, there were two disturbing cases that sparked nationwide outrage.

In Molo, a police vehicle reportedly ran over a Form Three student who had earlier been shot during clashes near a police station. The student later died from the injuries.

That same month, a car within President William Ruto’s official motorcade hit and killed a 79-year-old British man along Ngong Road near Adams Arcade.

The elderly man was simply crossing the road when he was struck by one of the fast-moving escort vehicles.

These rising cases have led to public concern, with many Kenyans demanding answers and action to stop the trend of recklessness and impunity among those entrusted with government vehicles.

The people of Kilgoris now join that growing national call for justice and accountability.
