Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has strongly condemned the violent scenes that broke out during the official unveiling of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s new political party.
Kindiki criticized those who use chaos and violence to push political agendas, warning that such actions threaten Kenya’s peace and democratic growth.
His statement came shortly after suspected hired goons attempted to disrupt the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) launch event held in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday morning, May 15.
Kindiki expressed deep concern over the incident and reminded leaders and citizens alike of the importance of maintaining peace, especially in political spaces.
He warned that political insults, hate speech, and physical confrontations only work against the country’s unity and development.
“Our country must uphold democratic tolerance and promote issue-based politics,” Kindiki said. “Using violence, insults, or divisive language to deal with political differences is unacceptable and must be condemned by all peace-loving citizens.”
He went on to say that Kenya’s future depends on leaders who embrace peace, dialogue, and mutual respect. “We have a responsibility to protect this country for current and future generations.
That means choosing peace and learning to live together, even when we do not agree on political matters,” he added.
According to reports and videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, chaos broke out just after Gachagua and officials of the DCP party finished launching the new political outfit. As they exited the venue, a group of suspected goons attempted to interfere with the proceedings.
Security officers who were present at the event responded quickly. To disperse the unruly crowd, they fired shots into the air. This action helped restore calm, but the incident temporarily disrupted the event and forced Gachagua’s team to pause and wait as officers controlled the situation.
Despite the scare, the event resumed shortly after, and Gachagua continued with his launch. He introduced the DCP party to the public alongside several of his close political allies.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party comes with a distinct identity. Its symbol is a neon green and white emblem featuring an image of fingers cupping an ear, with the words “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans) engraved—symbolising the party’s commitment to listening to the voices of ordinary citizens.
During the event, Gachagua announced the party’s leadership team. He appointed former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as Deputy Party Leader and named former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi as the National Organising Secretary.
While addressing the audience, Gachagua said the party’s main goal is to ensure that Kenyan citizens are truly heard.
“We believe that leaders must genuinely listen to the people—not just pretend to listen, but take action based on what Kenyans are saying,” he stated.
The DCP’s launch comes at a time of increased political realignment in the country, and Gachagua’s move is seen as a bold step toward shaping the political landscape ahead of the next general election.
