Senator Criticizes MCAs, Calls for Governor Natembeya’s Impeachment
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly criticized Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Trans Nzoia for travelling all the way to Kisumu to welcome Governor George Natembeya during his recent visit to the county on Monday.
According to Senator Cherargei, instead of giving the governor such a warm reception, the MCAs should be focused on initiating his impeachment due to what he termed as failed leadership and poor governance.
He argued that their actions only served to show support for a leader he believes should be held accountable.
The senator’s harsh remarks came shortly after Governor Natembeya arrived at Kisumu International Airport earlier in the day.
The governor was welcomed by a group of Trans Nzoia MCAs who had traveled approximately 169 kilometers to Kisumu just to receive him — a move that did not sit well with the outspoken senator.
In a strongly worded post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, May 26, Cherargei blasted the MCAs, branding them as “a national embarrassment.”
He expressed disappointment in their conduct, saying they were wasting time and county resources instead of taking steps to hold the governor accountable through constitutional means such as impeachment.
“The Trans Nzoia County MCAs are a national embarrassment. Rather than initiating the impeachment of Governor Natembeya over his failure in development and governance, they are busy rolling out red carpets for him like he’s royalty,” said Cherargei.
He added that the country must make a choice between standing firm on constitutional accountability or allowing corruption and mismanagement to continue unchecked.
This is not the first time Senator Cherargei has called for the removal of Governor Natembeya. Back in April, he made similar demands, accusing the governor of promoting tribal divisions within the county.
Cherargei claimed that Natembeya’s alleged actions, which include tribal favoritism, poor development planning, and involvement in corruption, make him unfit to hold public office.
He insisted that these issues are serious constitutional violations, citing Articles 10, 27, 73, 74, 75, and 174 of the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, which he believes the governor has contravened. “Natembeya should be impeached for fueling tribal tensions, corruption, and underdevelopment.
These are not minor concerns — they are constitutional violations that warrant serious action,” he said.
Governor Natembeya had flown to Kisumu and later held a political rally in Kakamega. This move has caused political tension and sparked debate, particularly among leaders who believe his actions are more about political showmanship than service delivery.
However, during the Kisumu rally, Governor Natembeya remained defiant. He insisted he would not be silenced or intimidated for speaking out, especially when it comes to issues affecting the people of Western Kenya.
He voiced strong opposition to the government’s plan to lease four sugar factories in the region and decried the lack of job opportunities for young people.
Referring to himself as a “general” and a “commando,” Natembeya said he has the constitutional right to express himself freely, and that he will continue doing so without fear. “The Constitution gives every Kenyan the right to speak up.
I won’t stop speaking because I am protected by the law. I now consider myself a commando and a general, because many people are behind me and support what I stand for,” he stated.
The governor claimed that attempts to silence him are politically motivated, especially as he has been vocal in opposing controversial government plans, including the sugar factory leases and the ongoing unemployment crisis among the youth.
He made it clear that he will not back down from highlighting such issues, regardless of the pressure he faces.
The political clash between Senator Cherargei and Governor Natembeya continues to stir debate across the country, with many watching closely to see if impeachment proceedings will indeed be initiated or if the war of words will escalate further.
