Veteran Somalia Military Figure Dies In Kenya
General Mohamed Said Hirsi Morgan, a respected and long-serving figure in Somalia’s military history, has passed away at a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
His death was confirmed on Wednesday, May 28, by Somali Member of Parliament Abdullahi Aden Kulane, who also shared a heartfelt condolence message.
“With deep sorrow, I send my condolences to the family, relatives, and the Somali Armed Forces on the passing of General Mohamed Saeed Hirsi (Morgan), who died today in Nairobi, Kenya,” MP Kulane stated.
According to information shared by Horseed Media, which cited family sources, General Morgan had been unwell for several days while in Kenya.
He reportedly developed serious abdominal pain while in Bosaso, the capital of the Bari region, before being moved for medical treatment.
Sadly, he did not recover. Born in 1949 in Qardho, located in Somalia’s Karkaar region, General Morgan received high-level military training in both the United States and Italy during his early military career.
Throughout his career, he held several key positions in Somalia’s military and government. One of his most prominent roles was serving as the Minister of Defense under the revolutionary government led by President Mohamed Siad Barre.
He remained in this position until the fall of Barre’s regime in 1991, making him the last person to hold the post during that era.
President Mohamed Siad Barre, a military officer and political leader, ruled Somalia from October 21, 1969, until January 26, 1991. After being overthrown, Barre went into exile in Nigeria, where he later died in 1995 due to a heart attack.
General Morgan also commanded the 26th Division of the Somali National Army, which operated in Somalia’s northern regions—now recognized as the self-declared independent state of Somaliland.
His leadership in that capacity remains a significant chapter in Somali military history.
MP Kulane described General Morgan as a senior military officer who played a vital role in protecting Somalia’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
“He was a high-ranking officer in the Somali Armed Forces and played an important role in defending the country’s borders and sovereignty,” Kulane said.
Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre also paid tribute to the fallen general, praising his dedication and bravery.
The Prime Minister referred to Morgan as a pillar of the Somali military during the years of the central government under the Somali National Force.
“I extend my condolences to his family, the Somali people, and our national army. The loss of General Mohamed Said Hirsi Morgan is deeply saddening.
He was a courageous officer who made significant contributions in shaping and strengthening the Somali military,” Prime Minister Abdi Barre remarked.
In recent years, General Morgan divided his time between Nairobi, Oman, and Garowe, the capital city of Puntland.
In Garowe, he continued serving his country by acting as a senior military advisor to the President of Puntland, demonstrating his continued commitment to national service even in his later years.
His death marks the end of an era for many in Somalia who view him as one of the last prominent figures from the revolutionary military period.
General Morgan’s legacy is expected to be remembered for generations, particularly for his role in shaping Somalia’s defense forces during a critical time in the nation’s history.
