A Nairobi County law enforcement officer lost his life on Saturday afternoon after he fell from the sixth floor of the City Hall Annex building. The annex is known to house the office of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer, who was dressed in his official navy blue uniform, fell and landed heavily on the pavement outside the county government offices.
Video footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke shows the officer appearing to jump from the rooftop towards the sixth floor. However, he tragically lost his footing and fell to the ground.
Disturbing images from the scene showed the lifeless body of the officer lying face up on the concrete, covered in a red cloth.
A large crowd quickly gathered, including members of the public and police officers, all visibly shocked and saddened by the incident.
While the exact cause of the fall remains unclear, there has been speculation among members of the public.
Some people believe the fall might have been accidental, while others fear it could have been a possible case of suicide. Authorities have not yet confirmed any of these claims.
Shortly after the tragedy, Nairobi Central Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal, along with other officers, arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.
The police launched an investigation to determine exactly what happened and whether foul play might have been involved.
The body of the deceased officer, whose name has not yet been made public, was taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home.
Authorities are now awaiting formal identification of the body by family members and a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
This unfortunate incident adds to a worrying trend of fatal falls from high-rise buildings in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya. In recent weeks, there have been multiple similar tragedies.
Just six days ago, an 8-year-old boy tragically died after falling from a tall building in Nairobi’s Eastleigh Estate.
Reports state that the boy fell from the 16th floor of a building located near the Carlifonia Police Station along Keroe Street. CCTV footage captured the boy climbing from the 14th to the 16th floor before he suddenly tripped and fell. He died instantly from serious injuries to his head and limbs.
In another recent case that happened on May 8, a 42-year-old construction worker also died in Eastleigh after falling from the 7th floor of a building under construction.
The man was working with a team of masons at the site on Galore Street when he slipped and fell. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
These tragic events have raised concern over safety measures in high-rise buildings, with many Kenyans calling for better enforcement of safety regulations, both at construction sites and residential buildings.
Authorities continue to investigate the latest incident at City Hall Annex as questions linger over how and why the fall occurred.
