Luhya MCA Amuses Kenyans While Condemning Thief for Stealing Thermoses and Plastic Tea Cups: “Ya Chai!”

Luhya MCA Cracks Netizens While Bashing Thief for Stealing Thermoses, Plastic Tea Cups: “Ya Chai!”

Kenyans on social media have been left in stitches after a Kakamega Member of County Assembly (MCA) passionately condemned a bizarre incident involving theft at a local school.

Robert Kundu Makhanu, the MCA representing Kongoni Ward in Likuyani Constituency, could hardly hide his shock and disappointment during an interview where he addressed the incident.

According to reports, a thief allegedly broke into a school and made away with two thermoses, several plastic cups, and a dozen plastic plates.

While this may seem petty, the crime took a dark turn, as it is also believed that the thief killed a security guard during the break-in.

The murder left the local community in shock, especially considering the low value of the stolen items.

Makhanu, while speaking to the media, did not mince his words. He questioned the thief’s judgment and criticized what he termed as a “community failure.”

He was visibly appalled that someone from the Luhya community, known for its strong cultural values, would commit such an act — especially for such low-cost items used for drinking tea.

“Sisi wa Luhya! You mean to tell me someone broke into a school to steal just two thermoses meant for tea? Two thermoses?” he said in disbelief. “You even take plastic cups, and twelve plastic plates? Honestly, what is happening to our people?”

The outspoken MCA went on to lament the loss of the guard’s life, noting that a family had been torn apart over something as trivial as tea flasks and utensils. “A thermos only costs KSh 185. Imagine that – someone lost their life over something worth just 185 shillings,” he said, clearly frustrated.

He further urged members of the community to reflect on their morals and change their ways. He emphasized that the issue wasn’t just about theft, but a deeper social problem that needs to be addressed by society as a whole.

The video of Makhanu’s reaction quickly went viral online. Many Kenyans were entertained by his candid and animated delivery, with some joking about how he knew the exact price of a thermos down to the last shilling. Others praised him for highlighting a serious issue in a humorous yet thought-provoking manner.

In the end, while his remarks sparked laughter, they also opened up an important conversation about crime, poverty, and the social values that guide communities.
