Woman Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for Killing Her Ex-Lover

The High Court sitting in Nanyuki has handed down a 40-year prison sentence to a woman found guilty of murdering her former boyfriend, bringing closure to a legal battle that has dragged on for over seven years.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Friday, June 6, it was confirmed that the woman had been convicted of murder for an offence committed on December 4, 2018.

According to details presented in court, the woman—alongside two accomplices—broke into the home of the deceased during the night and took his life.

The man, a businessman based in Nanyuki, was also robbed of several valuable possessions, including household electronics and his motor vehicle.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution team, led by Ms. Esther Kimani, presented a number of aggravating factors that influenced the severity of the sentence.

It was disclosed that the accused had a troubling criminal record. She was already serving three separate sentences for robbery and had two other robbery-related cases still pending in court.

Shockingly, the prosecution noted that some of these additional crimes were carried out while she was out on bond for the current murder case.

As a result, her bond had earlier been revoked. These circumstances painted a picture of a repeat offender with little regard for the law.

The court also heard that following the discovery of the man’s body, the accused and her accomplices were tracked down and arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) just a day later.

They were found at a petrol station in Murang’a, and in their possession was the deceased’s stolen car and several electronics believed to have been taken from the crime scene.

Further investigations revealed that the woman had once worked as a waitress at an entertainment venue owned by the deceased. The two were in a romantic relationship, and she was reportedly a frequent visitor to his residence, often seen in his company.

The tragic discovery was made on the morning of December 4, 2018, when the businessman failed to show up for work and stopped responding to phone calls. Concerned employees visited his home and found him lying in a pool of blood, having sustained multiple stab wounds.

Despite initially pleading not guilty to the murder charges, the woman was widely recognized in the community as the man’s partner, with many testifying that they had often seen the two together.

While the exact motive behind the killing remains unclear, unofficial reports suggest that a personal disagreement or domestic dispute could have led to the fatal attack. However, the prosecution did not establish a specific motive during the trial.

The ruling marks a significant moment in a case that has remained unresolved for years, highlighting the gravity of violent crimes and the consequences for repeat offenders.

The ODPP has welcomed the judgment as a strong message against criminal behavior and a step forward in ensuring justice for victims and their families.
