The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has officially announced the creation of three new police stations in Kenya, aiming to strengthen security and improve police services in key regions.
According to a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on June 5, the new police stations will be located in two counties—Nairobi and Turkana.
The notice stated, “In exercise of the powers granted under section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act, the Inspector-General hereby designates the establishments listed in the Schedule as Police Stations or Posts for the purposes of the Act.”
In Nairobi County, a new station named Utalii Police Station has been set up within the Ruaraka sub-county. This move follows increased reports of insecurity in the area, which prompted urgent government intervention.
In Turkana County, two new police facilities have also been established. The first is the Oropoi Police Station, located in Turkana West sub-county, while the second is the Loreng Police Post, also situated in the same sub-county. These two facilities are expected to serve the vast and often under-policed northern region of the country.
These additions are part of a broader nationwide effort to expand the reach of the National Police Service and improve public safety.
Over recent months, the government has been increasing the number of police stations across various counties to better manage crime and protect citizens.
The move to establish Utalii Police Station in Ruaraka comes after President William Ruto visited the area on March 11, 2025.
During the visit, he addressed local concerns about rising insecurity and ordered swift action. He instructed IG Kanja to ensure that the new station was officially recognized through a gazette notice by no later than Friday, March 14.
“Due to the ongoing security concerns in this area, I have directed the Inspector General to ensure this police station is gazetted by Friday,” President Ruto declared at the time.
He also emphasized the urgent need to deploy officers to the station so residents could feel safe and continue their daily lives without fear.
“Police officers must be immediately assigned here to protect people’s lives and property. That way, residents of Ruaraka can carry on with their normal activities without interference,” the President added.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has also echoed similar sentiments in the past. He has made commitments to set up new administrative and police posts, especially in regions affected by banditry and insecurity, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening internal security throughout the country.
The establishment of these three new police stations marks a step forward in improving the presence of law enforcement and ensuring the safety of citizens in both urban and remote areas.
