Breaking: IG Kanja Suspends Central Police OCS and Officers After Outrage Over Influencer’s Death

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, along with all police officers who were on duty the night popular influencer Albert Ojwang died, has been suspended.

Their interdiction comes in response to growing public outrage and concerns over the suspicious circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death while in police custody.

The announcement was made in the early hours of the morning through a statement from Muchiri Nyaga, the National Police Service (NPS) Corporate Communications Director, who was speaking on behalf of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

According to the statement, the suspension of the officers is meant to clear the way for an independent and impartial investigation into the incident.

Among those interdicted are the station’s OCS, the duty officer who was in charge that night, the officer guarding the cells (cell sentry), all report office personnel present during the incident, and any other police officers who were at the station and may have been involved in any way.

The NPS has stated that after the investigation is completed, appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be taken based on the findings.

Albert Ojwang, a widely followed social media figure, is said to have died under mysterious and unclear circumstances while held at the Central Police Station.

Police have given conflicting reports about the incident—one version claims he died after arriving at Mbagathi Hospital, while another suggests he passed away while still inside the police station.

These contradictions have fueled public suspicion and led to widespread demands for truth and justice. Civil society organizations, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and many members of the public have raised alarm over the inconsistencies and have called for a transparent investigation.

Some have also demanded an independent postmortem and a formal inquest to determine the exact cause of death.

The NPS has committed to fully cooperating with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which has begun its own separate investigations.

Meanwhile, Ojwang’s family and countless Kenyans on social media, especially on platform X (formerly Twitter), continue to call for justice and a full explanation of what occurred that night.

“To allow for a complete, fair, and swift investigation by IPOA into the tragic death of Albert Ojwang, the Inspector General has directed the immediate interdiction of all officers who were on duty at Central Police Station on the night of the incident,” part of the NPS statement said.

While exact details regarding Ojwang’s injuries remain unclear, many have questioned the decision to take him to Mbagathi Hospital, which is further away from the station compared to other major hospitals like Kenyatta National Hospital.

Additionally, it remains unknown whether he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance or another vehicle. These gaps in information have led to further concerns and criticism from human rights defenders who insist the police must account for every step taken.

Ojwang’s death has sparked intense public debate and suspicion, with many people accusing the police of possible negligence or misconduct. The story has gone viral, drawing national attention and putting law enforcement under scrutiny.

In response to the controversy, Kenyans have been voicing their frustrations online, and some social media users have even threatened to hold peaceful protests outside the Central Police Station until they receive clear and honest answers about what really happened to Albert Ojwang.
