Chaos Erupts in Machakos Assembly as MCAs Fight Over Leadership Changes

Tensions flared into full-blown chaos at the Machakos County Assembly after a heated disagreement among Members of County Assembly (MCAs) led to a violent physical confrontation over proposed changes in the assembly’s leadership structure.

The dramatic scenes unfolded during a session where fists and kicks were thrown freely among lawmakers, following a bitter standoff triggered by alleged efforts to reshuffle key leadership roles—particularly on the minority side of the house.

According to reports, the chaos began shortly after the Speaker of the County Assembly formally announced leadership changes said to have been initiated by the Wiper Democratic Movement.

The Speaker communicated to the house that the Wiper Party had endorsed a new lineup of leaders, sparking an angry reaction from a section of the assembly members.

Disputed Appointments Spark Uproar

The most hotly contested change was the proposed appointment of Mathani Ward MCA, Francis Kavyu, as the new Minority Leader. Several MCAs strongly opposed the move, arguing that Kavyu is affiliated with the Majority side and therefore ineligible to lead the minority bloc.

The announcement threw the entire sitting into disorder. Tensions quickly escalated as opposing MCAs from both the Majority and Minority camps began physically attacking each other. According to images and videos shared by Newshub.co.ke, some members charged toward the Speaker’s podium in protest, further fueling the chaos.

Scuffle Over the Mace

In the midst of the confusion, the sergeant-at-arms was seen struggling to protect the mace, the assembly’s official symbol of authority. At one point, as an officer attempted to remove the mace to restore order, a group of MCAs chased after it, insisting the mace be returned so the session could resume.

Despite those efforts, the assembly was forced to adjourn. Several leaders reportedly sustained injuries during the fracas, although no serious casualties were confirmed.

Behind the Power Struggle

The chaos stems from recent moves by the Wiper Democratic Movement, which reportedly resolved to remove Felix Ngui, MCA for Katangi Ward, and Mbili Ndawa of Matuu Ward—who is affiliated with Maendeleo Chap Chap—from their leadership roles within the assembly.

The Wiper Party further recommended that Ngui be removed from the County Assembly Service Board (CASB). In his place, the party proposed Deputy Majority Whip Winnifred Mutua to take over the post, a move that intensified the already heated political atmosphere.

Recurring Tensions in the Assembly

This is not the first time the Machakos Assembly has descended into disorder. In April 2025, a similar showdown erupted during attempts to impeach Speaker Anne Kiusya, as rumors swirled about an alleged plan to impeach Governor Wavinya Ndeti. That earlier standoff saw MCAs allied to Kiusya clash with those supporting her ouster.

At the heart of that conflict were allegations from Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi, who accused Speaker Kiusya of mismanaging and failing to account for public funds, further straining relations within the Assembly.

As of now, calm is yet to fully return to the Machakos County Assembly. The latest fight has once again exposed deep divisions, with party politics and leadership wrangles taking center stage—leaving service delivery and governance in limbo.
