There was tension and chaos outside Nairobi’s City Mortuary on Tuesday after an angry crowd disrupted a press briefing by Homa Bay Woman Representative Joyce Atieno Bensuda.
The lawmaker was preparing to speak to the media following the autopsy results of popular X (formerly Twitter) influencer and blogger, Albert Ojwang.
Bensuda had just taken her place to address journalists when she was met with fierce resistance from protestors and activists gathered at the scene.
The crowd, visibly emotional and upset, started shouting her down before she could even begin speaking. Many of them were furious after the pathologist’s report contradicted the police’s initial claim that Ojwang had died by suicide.
The autopsy, conducted by government pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia, revealed that Ojwang had multiple injuries, including head trauma and signs of neck compression. According to Dr. Midia, these findings strongly indicated that Ojwang was assaulted, not that he harmed himself, as initially suggested by the police.
“The cause of death is very clear. There is a head injury, neck compression, and other injuries found on different parts of the body. All signs point towards assault,” said Midia.
The disturbing revelations sparked outrage among protestors, who accused Bensuda and other leaders of failing to fight for justice in Ojwang’s case.
As she tried to continue her statement in the presence of Ojwang’s father, the crowd grew louder and more aggressive. Chants like “You’re killing people” and “Go back to parliament” echoed across the mortuary grounds.
Video footage obtained by Newshub.co.ke shows a visibly shaken Bensuda being chased away by demonstrators. She was seen trying to calm the crowd with her hands clasped together, almost in a pleading gesture, before she finally walked away.
A brief standoff occurred as some members of the crowd followed her, accusing her of arriving late for the post-mortem and failing to stand up strongly for Ojwang while he was alive. Bensuda attempted to defend herself from the criticism but was ultimately forced to retreat as the situation became too hostile.
Meanwhile, the protest outside the mortuary caused disruptions to traffic at the nearby roundabout. Emotions ran high as demonstrators demanded accountability and justice following the pathologist’s findings.
Albert Ojwang’s death has stirred national attention, especially among youth and digital activists, who now believe there was foul play involved. Calls for an independent investigation into his death have intensified, with many blaming political leaders for remaining silent until after the tragedy.
The heated events at the City Mortuary mark a turning point in the case, with pressure now mounting on law enforcement agencies and political leaders to come clean and ensure justice for the late blogger.
