Raila Odinga Demands Action from Government Over Mysterious Death of Influencer Albert Ojwang
ODM party leader Raila Odinga has spoken out strongly about the sudden and suspicious death of popular X (formerly Twitter) influencer Albert Ojwang, issuing tough demands to the government.
In his statement on Tuesday, June 10, Raila expressed deep concern over the increasing number of young Kenyans who are dying under unclear and disturbing circumstances. He noted that Ojwang’s death is the latest in a worrying pattern of such incidents.
Albert Ojwang was confirmed dead on Sunday, June 8. His death came just hours after he was reportedly arrested from his rural home in Homa Bay County and taken to Nairobi, where he was detained at the Central Police Station.
His sudden demise has caused widespread outrage across the country, with many Kenyans calling for justice and transparency.
There has been growing public anger towards the police, particularly because of the conflicting and suspicious explanations they have given about the events leading to Ojwang’s death. Raila condemned the incident, calling it a tragic and unacceptable injustice.
He insisted that a thorough, fast, and credible investigation must be carried out immediately to uncover the truth behind what happened.
“When citizens can no longer distinguish between police injustice and mob injustice, then we must accept that we are facing a deep moral and institutional failure as a country,” Raila said, warning that this trend puts the nation’s future at great risk.
He emphasized that getting to the bottom of Ojwang’s case, as well as other unresolved cases involving police misconduct since 2023, is not optional but necessary. Raila’s statement adds more pressure on security agencies who are already under fire from various quarters.
Other political leaders have also spoken out. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who is a strong ally of the Kenya Kwanza administration, admitted that he was left “speechless” by Ojwang’s death. His remarks show that concern over the incident has cut across political lines.
Former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi also joined in, saying that the police must be held responsible for their actions. He pointed out that Ojwang, who was not only a social media personality but also a teacher, deserved justice and dignity in death.
Throughout Tuesday, there was growing tension and anxiety surrounding the case, particularly due to the delay in the release of the post-mortem results. Many Kenyans were eagerly waiting for answers.
When the post-mortem report was finally released, it revealed disturbing details. According to the pathologists, Ojwang died as a result of serious head injuries, compression of the neck, and multiple soft tissue injuries.
This ruled out earlier police claims that he may have caused harm to himself while in custody.
