Kenyan 1500M Runner Eliud Kipsang Dies in the U.S.
The athletics community is in deep mourning following the sudden death of Kenyan-born middle-distance runner Eliud Kipsang.
Kipsang tragically passed away on Tuesday, June 10, with reports from international media stating that he died after suffering a cardiac arrest. The young athlete, who had been living and training in Alabama, United States, was rushed to a hospital for emergency medical attention. However, doctors were unable to save him.
His unexpected death came as a shock to his family, friends, and fans. Tributes have since poured in across social media and athletics platforms, remembering Kipsang not only as a gifted runner but also as a determined and humble individual who inspired many through his performances, especially in the 1500-meter race.
Born on September 9, 1996, in Kapsang village, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, Kipsang showed early signs of greatness in athletics. He began making headlines in 2019 when he represented Kenya in the Africa Championships. His talent and drive soon led him to the United States, where he enrolled in college to further both his academic and athletic journey.
While studying public health, Kipsang’s athletics career began to rise when he joined the University of Alabama. Competing for the Crimson Tide, he made his debut at the SEC Championships, where he placed 28th in the five-mile race with a time of 24:49.90 — an impressive start for a freshman athlete.
That debut marked the beginning of an outstanding NCAA career that saw him grow into one of the best collegiate runners in the country.
One of the biggest highlights of his career came when he broke the NCAA 1500m record by running an incredible time of 3:33.74.
This historic achievement earned him national recognition and admiration across the track and field world. His record remained unchallenged until American athlete Liam Murphy surpassed it on March 27, 2025.
Following his success at the university level, Kipsang transitioned into professional athletics. His talent attracted major sponsors, and he signed a deal with Adidas, joining the ranks of elite athletes around the world.
In the wake of his untimely passing, a GoFundMe page has been created to help raise money for the repatriation of his body back to Kenya so that he can be laid to rest in his homeland.
Kipsang’s death adds to a growing list of young Kenyan athletes who have tragically lost their lives while pursuing their dreams abroad. Just a few months ago, on Christmas night in 2024, another Kenyan athlete, 24-year-old Joan Jepngetich, died in a single-vehicle car crash in the U.S.
The fatal crash took place around 10:33 p.m. American time (about 6:00 a.m. Kenyan time). According to reports, the Mercedes-Benz she was in hit a tree and caught fire shortly after the collision, claiming her life on the spot.
As the Kenyan sports community grieves once again, many are calling for more support for young athletes living abroad, both emotionally and professionally. Eliud Kipsang’s legacy lives on through the memories he created, the records he set, and the hearts he touched on and off the track.
