LIVE BLOG: Protesters Occupy Moi Avenue

10:19am – In Kisii, demonstrators have lit a tyre on the road, causing a temporary blockage. The protest has remained calm so far, though police are maintaining high alert across the town.

10:14am – Lang’ata Road is now closed, particularly near the Madaraka roundabout, with security forces preventing access.

Police presence has also increased near Nyayo Stadium. Meanwhile, along Haile Selassie Avenue, officers are dispersing a group of protesters on motorbikes, chasing them away from the area.

9:56am – Tension is rising in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), where police have fired teargas canisters at crowds.

This happened at the intersection of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street, as well as along University Way, close to Central Police Station, in an attempt to scatter demonstrators.

9:52am – In Kisii town, protests have kicked off, with residents already filling the streets. Protesters are chanting slogans, blowing whistles, and marching together through the town center, showing solidarity with others around the country.

9:43am – A growing group of protesters in Nairobi CBD have lit candles in a peaceful demonstration. The number of participants continues to increase steadily, with many more expected to join throughout the day.

9:40am – Kisumu remains mostly calm. The main roads and streets are largely deserted as many locals have chosen not to take part in today’s protests. Traffic in the city is flowing without interruptions.

9:30am – In Mombasa City, demonstrations are underway. Protesters are out in the streets waving Kenyan flags and carrying placards as they sing and dance through the CBD.

Meanwhile, back in Nairobi, the crowd at Moi Avenue is swelling, with people chanting and waving flags in unity.

9:24am – A group of leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, were blocked from accessing Parliament buildings after trying to lay flower wreaths in memory of protesters who died during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations. They were ordered to turn back by security officers.

9:20am – Earlier, Kalonzo and Wamalwa led a prayer session at Holy Family Basilica. After the prayers, they began a walk towards the CBD, intending to lay wreaths at the gates of Parliament to honour the lives lost in the recent protests.

8:50am – Opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and several allies, gathered at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.

During the event, they demanded justice and compensation for the families of young protesters who lost their lives during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

The leaders also introduced a new initiative—the People’s Justice Commission—which will be headed by former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi.

This commission is tasked with pushing for accountability and justice for those affected during the protests.

8:18am – A heavy deployment of police officers has been observed along State House Road, where protest organizers are reportedly planning to “occupy” State House.

The road has been fully cordoned off, with security barriers and reinforcements in place to prevent any unauthorized access.

7:16am – Several key roads leading to the Nairobi CBD were blocked early this morning, disrupting normal transport services.

Police officers set up barricades and checkpoints on major routes including Jogoo Road, Ngong Road, Limuru Road, Kiambu Road, and Mombasa Road. They were seen conducting random checks and turning vehicles away.

On Jogoo Road, a police roadblock was mounted near City Stadium. Mombasa Road had heightened security near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Along Limuru Road, police positioned themselves close to the Israeli Embassy, and another checkpoint was spotted near Runda Mall on Kiambu Road.

7:00am – Police have sealed off several access points and fortified security around Parliament in anticipation of today’s planned protests. This follows last year’s breach, when protesters stormed Parliament.

Today, hundreds of anti-riot police officers have been deployed to secure the area, with armoured vehicles and water cannons stationed outside Bunge Towers.

5:00am – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen held an early morning meeting with top police commanders, including Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

After the briefing, Murkomen was seen walking through Nairobi’s streets to assess the security arrangements ahead of the anticipated protests.
