Ex-County Official Charged for Allegedly Torching MP Mutuse’s Hotel
Former Machakos County Executive Committee member, Urbanus Wambua, has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over allegations that he was involved in the burning of a hotel owned by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament, Mwengi Mutuse.
This follows claims that the arson attack may have been politically motivated, rather than just a random act of violence during the recent nationwide protests.
The hotel, situated in Wote town, was among several buildings that were set on fire and destroyed during the mass demonstrations held on June 25.
MP Mwengi Mutuse, who is widely known for spearheading the impeachment motion against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, reportedly suffered huge losses when his hotel was targeted by a violent mob.
Initial police reports suggested that the destruction was caused by rowdy protestors, but new evidence has prompted the DCI to investigate deeper into the matter.
Urbanus Wambua’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, confirmed that his client had been called in for questioning and would be appearing before the DCI alongside Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo. Njiru made this announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:
“Today, I and Sen. Dan Maanzo shall be appearing before the DCI Kiambu Road, representing former Urbanus Wambua, who is being accused of burning down Mr. Mwengi Mutuse’s hotel at Wote.”
The investigations aim to establish whether the arson was a planned act with political motives, rather than just a case of protestors going rogue. The DCI is looking into the possibility that the violence could have involved organized elements beyond the spontaneous demonstrations.
On June 25, during the protests held in memory of victims of police brutality, numerous businesses across the country were affected. Several owners reported being attacked, with some establishments looted while others were burned to the ground.
What began as peaceful protests in places like Nairobi, Eldoret, and other towns, quickly turned chaotic when armed gangs joined in. These thugs were seen clashing with peaceful demonstrators, damaging property, stealing goods, and attacking people.
Even government offices and police stations were not spared, with some also being vandalized, looted, and set ablaze by the violent infiltrators.
MP Mwengi Mutuse, although a first-term legislator, is already a familiar name in Kenyan politics. He attracted national attention when he tabled the impeachment motion against then-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The motion cited serious accusations including abuse of office and questionable accumulation of wealth. Gachagua was eventually impeached, a controversial move that has sparked heated debates and divisions within the country’s political circles.
As investigations continue, many are watching closely to see whether the claims against Urbanus Wambua will reveal a politically driven plot behind the destruction, or whether the attack on Mutuse’s property was merely a result of the chaos that erupted during the protests.
