Ruto Makes New Appointments to Key Government Health Agencies
President William Ruto has announced two new appointments to strengthen his administration’s efforts in improving service delivery across the country.
In a gazette notice dated July 4, the President named John Munyu as the new Non-Executive Chairperson of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB).
Munyu will serve in this role for a term of three years, taking over from Dr. Charles Githinji, whose previous appointment has been officially revoked.
John Munyu brings with him over 26 years of experience in the pharmaceutical field and the broader healthcare supply chain.
His career spans both the public and private sectors, giving him a wide range of expertise and knowledge. Notably, he served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) from January 2010 to January 2017.
In addition, he has held board positions in several important health institutions, including the National Quality Control Laboratory (NQCL), which ensures the safety and quality of medical products in Kenya.
Following the revocation of Dr. Githinji’s appointment at PPB, President Ruto appointed him to a new position. Dr. Githinji will now serve as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Biovax Institute, also for a period of three years. He replaces Dr. Swarup Mishra, the founder of the Mediheal Group of Hospitals.
Dr. Mishra’s exit from the Biovax Institute comes at a time when Mediheal Hospital has been caught up in a major controversy involving allegations of organ trafficking. The scandal, which attracted national attention, raised serious concerns about the ethics and practices at the facility.
President Ruto made the appointments using powers granted under section 6(1)(a) of the State Corporations Act, read together with section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act. The official gazette notice stated:
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Charles Githinji (Dr.) to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Kenya Biovax Institute Limited, for three (3) years.”
These latest appointments reflect President Ruto’s ongoing efforts to re-energize key public health institutions by placing experienced professionals in leadership roles.
