A tragic road accident occurred on the evening of Friday, July 4, at Mlima Kiu near Salama town along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving several others with serious injuries.
The deadly crash involved four vehicles — a speeding truck, a personal car, and two Nissan matatus that were carrying passengers heading to Nairobi.
According to eyewitness reports, the accident happened when the truck, which was descending the steep and dangerous stretch of Mlima Kiu, lost control due to its high speed.
The out-of-control truck veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a private car. It then continued to crash into two matatus that were packed with commuters. The impact was extremely forceful, and the truck reportedly crushed the smaller vehicles completely.
The crash scattered debris and twisted metal across the highway, with images seen by NewsHub showing the extent of the destruction.
As a result of the horrific accident, three people, including a 10-year-old child, tragically died at the scene. Several other passengers suffered serious injuries and were in critical condition.
Emergency response teams, together with Good Samaritans, rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and recover the bodies of those who lost their lives.
The injured victims were quickly transported to Sultan Hamud Hospital, where they were admitted for urgent medical attention.
Due to the severity of the crash and the large debris left behind, traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway was heavily disrupted.
Vehicles were stuck for hours as police officers and emergency responders worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of traffic.
This tragic incident occurred just hours after a separate accident in Mombasa County, where a teacher died in a crash involving a school trip.
The accident took place in the Maasai area along the Taita Taveta–Mombasa highway. The teacher, who was accompanying a group of students, lost their life, while two students sustained serious injuries. Ten more students were reported to have suffered minor injuries.
These back-to-back accidents have raised renewed concerns over road safety, speeding, and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, especially along Kenya’s major highways.
