Oscar Sudi Warns Gachagua of Possible Arrest, Says Government Will Take Action

Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has declared that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will soon be arrested, following the recent crackdown on his political allies. Sudi, who is a strong supporter of President William Ruto, said that the arrests will not stop with Gachagua’s allies, but will extend to the former Deputy President himself.

Speaking during a public event in Meru on Saturday, July 6, Sudi responded to Gachagua’s claims about the ongoing arrests. Gachagua had earlier revealed that two youth leaders from the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), which is linked to him, were arrested and then re-arrested, allegedly because of their involvement in the June 25 protests.

Gachagua further alleged that President Ruto had instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest young people associated with his political faction. He also accused several governors close to the President of helping to coordinate the crackdown.

However, Sudi dismissed claims that the arrests are politically driven. Instead, he insisted that the government’s actions are focused on maintaining national peace and security. He accused Gachagua and his allies of being behind the recent unrest.

“I see Gachagua spreading propaganda, telling people that President Ruto is the one ordering these arrests. But the truth is that those being arrested were the ones who funded the protests, and you, Gachagua, were among them,” Sudi said.

He added, “Let me make this very clear – once we are done arresting all your foot soldiers, we will come for you too. You cannot go around financing chaos, encouraging incitement, spreading hate, and promoting toxic politics that result in destruction and violence.”

Sudi’s remarks came just days after DCI boss Mohammed Amin confirmed that the government has launched an intensive operation to arrest individuals believed to have caused violence during the June 25 protests. These demonstrations reportedly led to the looting of police stations, the destruction of government buildings, and damage to private businesses.

According to Amin, as of Monday, June 30, a total of 485 suspects have been arrested in connection with the protests. Out of these, 448 have already been charged in court, while investigations are still ongoing for 37 others.

The DCI boss warned that if investigations uncover any link between Rigathi Gachagua and the violence, he too will be prosecuted. He stressed that the former Deputy President does not have immunity and will be treated like any other citizen under Kenyan law.

“I want to make it clear that Rigathi Gachagua is not above the law. He has no legal immunity that shields him from prosecution,” Amin said in a public statement.

He added, “If our investigations show that Gachagua was involved in any way in the violent protests or criminal acts, then appropriate legal action will be taken against him.”

Despite the warnings, Amin clarified that no official summons have been issued against Gachagua at this point in time. However, he emphasized that the law applies equally to everyone and that the investigation will continue without fear or favor.

The tension between President Ruto’s administration and Gachagua has been building in recent weeks, especially following a wave of youth-led protests and increasing political divisions within the ruling coalition.
