The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has called on the Ministry of Education to urgently intervene in a disturbing case of alleged sexual abuse involving a teacher at Alliance Girls High School.
FIDA wants immediate action taken against the school’s administration for reportedly failing to address the serious misconduct claims raised by current and former students.
The allegations came to light through an investigation by African Uncensored, during which several students and alumni revealed that they had been sexually abused by a teacher at the school.
These revelations have sparked public outrage and a demand for accountability from all parties involved.
Speaking on Tuesday, July 8, FIDA Chairperson Christine Kungu strongly criticized the school’s leadership for what she described as a failure to act against the teacher in question.
She emphasized that both disciplinary and legal measures must be taken against those responsible, including individuals who may have protected or enabled the abuse.
“We are demanding that the Ministry of Education take responsibility by holding the school accountable for not safeguarding its students.
Legal and disciplinary action must be taken against all individuals who contributed to or allowed this abuse to happen,” said Kungu.
She further urged the Ministry to issue a national directive that would require all schools to put in place clear systems for teachers and school staff to respond effectively to cases of sexual and gender-based violence.
This, she said, is necessary to prevent such incidents in the future and to promote a safer environment in educational institutions.
FIDA also pressed the Board of Management at Alliance Girls High School to launch an independent and transparent investigation into the allegations involving the accused teacher. They want the board to ensure that appropriate action is taken without bias or delay.
“The Ministry must also ensure that all schools—both public and private—adopt well-defined policies addressing gender-based violence and harassment. These policies should include mandatory annual training for teachers on how to handle and prevent such incidents,” the statement added.
Additionally, FIDA recommended that the government set up proper systems in schools that allow students to report abuse without fear of punishment or retaliation.
They stressed the importance of establishing clear and enforceable guidelines to protect the safety and dignity of every learner in the country.
The lawyers encouraged survivors of such abuse to come forward, assuring them of full legal and psychological support. FIDA emphasized that speaking out is a vital step toward ending the culture of silence and impunity that has enabled such abuse to persist.
FIDA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring student welfare, stating that protecting learners is crucial to rebuilding trust and dignity in Kenya’s education system.
“We commend the brave survivors for speaking up and challenging the culture of silence and protection that has existed at Alliance Girls High School for far too long,” FIDA stated.
“Schools must be secure places where students feel safe and respected. It is the duty of every school to uphold the highest standards when it comes to protecting children’s rights and ensuring their well-being,” the organization concluded.
