The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has released important guidance for students who applied for HELB loans or scholarships as minors before obtaining their National Identification Cards.
The announcement, made on Friday, July 11, provides step-by-step instructions on how to update personal details on the HELB portal once a student receives their National ID.
According to HELB, students should not create a new HELB account after getting their ID cards. Instead, they are advised to log in to the same account they created earlier using their KCSE index number and simply update the personal details with their new ID information.
“Do not open a new account. Use the same account you registered using your KCSE index number and update your ID information,” the statement emphasized.
Why Is This Update Necessary?
Many students apply for HELB loans or scholarships before turning 18, meaning they don’t yet have National IDs. During this period, they typically use their KCSE index numbers to register and apply for funding through the HELB portal.
Once they turn 18 and are issued National ID cards, they are required to update their HELB profiles with the new ID details. This ensures their records remain accurate and properly linked to official government databases for verification, disbursement, and repayment purposes.
Steps to Update Your HELB Account With ID Details:
- Visit the HELB Portal: Go to www.helb.co.ke or access the HELB student portal directly.
- Log In Using Your KCSE Index Number: Use the same index number you used when first registering for HELB services.
- Navigate to the Profile Update Section: Once logged in, find the section where you can update your personal information.
- Enter Your National ID Number: Replace or update your current identification details with your valid National ID.
- Save and Confirm the Changes: Make sure all updated information is correct before saving.
Facing Errors During the Update Process?
If you’re encountering error messages—especially one stating that your ID is already activated on another device—HELB has offered quick assistance. The issue has mainly affected students applying for September 2024 university and college intake, particularly the latest KCSE candidates.
“If you receive an error that says your National ID is activated on another device, don’t panic. Send us a direct message (DM) on our official social media pages,” HELB advised.
Make sure to include:
- Your registered phone number
- Your National ID number
This will help the HELB support team resolve the issue faster and get you back on track with your loan or scholarship application.
Where to Get Support:
HELB encourages students to use official communication channels such as:
- Verified HELB social media pages
- The HELB help desk
- Direct contact numbers listed on their official website
By following these steps and using the right support channels, students can easily update their HELB accounts and continue with the funding process without delays or errors.
