The crypto market has seen a strong start in 2025, and the second half of the year is shaping up to be just as eventful. Analysts are closely watching several major trends, including the growing popularity of bitcoin treasury companies, the rise of crypto-related IPOs and ETFs, and the uncertain future of altcoins like Ethereum. Here’s a look at what investors can expect as the year progresses.
Bitcoin Treasury Companies Are Becoming Market Powerhouses
One of the biggest developments in 2025 has been the rise of bitcoin treasury companies. These are firms that choose to hold a significant portion of their reserve assets in bitcoin, either as a hedge against inflation or because they believe bitcoin will eventually become a global, neutral reserve asset.
Companies like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), led by Michael Saylor, have been pioneers in this space. But they’re no longer alone. Newer players such as Metaplanet and Twenty One have joined the movement, and there are now around 135 publicly traded companies that include bitcoin in their treasury reserves.
Stephen Cole, co-founder and CEO of Castle (a bitcoin treasury solution provider), predicts that this trend will only grow stronger in the coming months. According to Cole, the second half of 2025 will be a “turning point” for bitcoin adoption among businesses.
He expects that not only small and medium-sized enterprises but also major tech firms will start building their bitcoin reserves and outlining formal strategies for how much they plan to allocate.
Cole emphasized, “The debate has shifted from if a company should buy bitcoin to when it should buy.” The adoption of bitcoin as a treasury asset is moving quickly from niche to mainstream, especially as global market dynamics evolve.
Are Altcoins Losing Their Shine?
As bitcoin becomes a more dominant force in the market—especially through corporate treasury adoption—there are growing concerns about what this might mean for altcoins, or alternative cryptocurrencies.
David Lawant, Head of Research at FalconX, explained that altcoins have traditionally served two main purposes: offering exposure to higher beta returns relative to bitcoin and providing unique use cases that bitcoin’s blockchain doesn’t support.
Now, he says, the first purpose is being satisfied more efficiently by bitcoin itself, especially through easier access via bitcoin treasury companies and newly developed trading tools like crypto options. Still, Lawant cautions against counting altcoins out entirely.
“There’s still room for altcoins that offer real utility and innovation,” he said. “As regulatory changes, such as updates in crypto market structures and more openness to decentralized finance (DeFi), continue to evolve, new opportunities for altcoins could emerge.”
In short, the altcoin market may be shrinking, but it’s not dead—especially for coins with strong technology and clear value propositions.
Boom in Crypto ETFs and Public Listings
Investors are also finding new ways to invest in cryptocurrencies beyond just buying tokens directly. Spot ETFs for bitcoin and ether have already gained significant traction, and analysts believe more ETFs focused on other cryptocurrencies are on the way.
Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart expects that by the end of 2025, a large number of the currently proposed ETF structures will be approved—including those that allow in-kind redemptions and staking features. This will not only expand the ETF landscape but also make them more efficient and attractive to large investors.
Meanwhile, the IPO boom in the crypto sector is another major storyline. The successful public offering of Circle (CRCL), a major stablecoin issuer, has turned heads on Wall Street.
Companies like Galaxy (GLXY) and eToro (ETOR) have also gone public this year. And more crypto-focused companies—such as Gemini, Kraken, Consensys, and Ripple—are expected to follow suit.
Nate Geraci, President of The ETF Store, believes these IPOs will help bring crypto more firmly into mainstream finance and offer traditional investors more exposure to the digital asset space without directly owning volatile cryptocurrencies.
Ethereum’s Moment of Reckoning?
While bitcoin has surged ahead in 2025, ether (ETH)—the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network—has struggled to keep up. Despite being the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, ether has underperformed bitcoin and even some smaller blockchain projects like Solana and Binance Smart Chain.
Ether’s lack of momentum has raised questions about whether it still holds long-term value. While some Ethereum supporters liken ether to “digital oil” that powers a decentralized computing network, others worry that widespread use of Ethereum’s technology doesn’t always translate into strong price performance for ETH itself.
Still, experts like David Lawant believe Ethereum is far from finished. According to him, sentiment around Ethereum has been improving in recent months.
One reason is that Ethereum’s ties to traditional financial markets have grown stronger. For instance, it now has an active futures market on CME and has launched spot ETFs, which have helped drive institutional interest.
Ether also remains underheld by large investors, which could mean there is room for growth—especially if staking becomes part of spot ETFs. Analysts believe that if these trends play out as expected, Ethereum could see a meaningful recovery in the months ahead.
Currently, ether’s value compared to bitcoin is still far below its past highs. Data from CoinGecko shows ETH is down about 85% relative to BTC since its all-time high of 0.1475 ETH per BTC, which occurred about eight years ago. However, with favorable developments, there’s a possibility of a turnaround.
Final Thoughts: What Crypto Investors Should Watch
The second half of 2025 is expected to be crucial for both bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market. Key developments include:
- The mainstream rise of bitcoin treasury companies, with even major corporations expected to join.
- Increased ETF approvals and innovations, offering new, efficient ways to invest in digital assets.
- A surge in crypto company IPOs, providing more exposure in traditional financial markets.
- A potential comeback story for Ethereum, if institutional support grows and staking features become widely accepted.
As the market continues to mature and integrate with the global financial system, investors should be prepared for rapid changes—but also new opportunities.
Whether you’re holding bitcoin, diversifying with altcoins, or investing through ETFs, the next few months may be pivotal for shaping the long-term future of crypto.
