Former PS Esther Koimett Joins Car and General as Director
Former Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Esther Koimett, has secured a new role as Director at Car and General, a company listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
Koimett, who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, brings a wealth of experience to the company.
Her appointment was officially announced in a public notice on November 7, with Car and General describing her as one of Kenya’s most accomplished and respected public servants.
According to the statement, Koimett has over 35 years of experience in various key sectors, including investment promotion, banking, privatization, public enterprise reform, and policy development.
The company praised her for her vast knowledge and leadership skills, which have contributed significantly to Kenya’s economic growth over the years.
Before her recent appointment, Koimett served in several top government positions. During President Mwai Kibaki’s administration between 2002 and 2005, she was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Information.
She also served as Investment Secretary and Director General for Public Investments and Portfolio Management at the National Treasury, where she played an important role in managing government-owned investments and promoting efficient use of public resources.
In addition to her government service, Koimett previously worked as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, where she championed financial inclusion and modernization of banking services.
Her professional record extends beyond government service, having sat on several major corporate boards.
Before joining Car and General, she chaired the boards of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya Ltd, among others. Her experience in both public and private sectors is seen as a great asset to Car and General’s leadership team.
Academically, Koimett holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi.
She also completed an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at Strathmore University, further strengthening her leadership and strategic management skills.
Koimett is also a certified member of the Institute of Investment and Financial Analysts, reflecting her strong background in finance and economic management.
She is the daughter of the late Nicholas Biwott, a former cabinet minister known for his influence in Kenyan politics and business.
Car and General Kenya PLC, which was established in 1936, is a leading diversified company headquartered in Nairobi. It operates across several countries in East Africa, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
The company deals in a wide range of products and services such as motorcycles, tuk-tuks, generators, agricultural machinery, and power equipment.
It also has investments in real estate and manufacturing, making it one of the region’s most dynamic and fast-growing enterprises.
