Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the main suspect linked to the killing of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kenya’s largest referral hospital.
The arrest was made on the evening of July 17, following the shocking murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa—a patient who had been admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025. According to early reports, a nurse last checked on Edward around 11:30 a.m. on the day of the murder and recorded his blood pressure.
Later, at around 12:30 p.m., a family member visited him and confirmed that he was doing fine before leaving the ward an hour later, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
However, just thirty minutes after the relative left, at around 2 p.m., a hospital cleaner walking along the corridor saw blood flowing from the patient’s neck. The matter was immediately reported, and homicide detectives rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers noticed a trail of bloody footprints leading from Edward’s bed to a nearby toilet, and then on to a side room within the ward, which is where the suspect had been admitted.
Inside the suspect’s room, investigators discovered critical pieces of evidence: a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bed sheet. Additionally, a knife carefully wrapped in gloves was also recovered.
These items have since been handed over to the National Forensic Laboratory for detailed scientific analysis, which is expected to play a vital role in building a solid case against the suspect.
Initial findings also revealed that the suspect had been a patient at KNH since December 1, 2024. Even more disturbing, detectives have linked him to the earlier murder of another patient at the same facility.
That victim, 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, was killed in Ward 7C during the night between February 6 and 7 this year.
In the earlier case, a comprehensive file had been prepared and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). However, the ODPP advised the investigators to carry out additional inquiries to strengthen the evidence before proceeding with formal charges.
Following his arrest on July 17, the suspect has been taken into custody and is currently being processed by police. He is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure justice is served in both murder cases.
