Natembeya Faces Another Violent Attack at Kakamega Rally
Kakamega, Kenya — Tensions spiraled again today as Governor George Natembeya faced another violent disruption during a campaign event in Kabuchai Ward, Kakamega.
Witnesses say a group of men armed with rungus (traditional clubs) stormed the gathering, triggering panic and chaos.
During Natembeya’s address to supporters, a crowd of attackers allegedly broke through security lines.
Several people reported seeing wooden clubs, and some vehicles in his convoy were hit or damaged. The rally turned chaotic as attendees scattered, shielding themselves from the sudden aggression.
Supporters and party officials claimed that the attackers were “hired goons” sent deliberately to intimidate Natembeya and disrupt the event.
According to his party, the group was not random protestors but a coordinated force aimed at undermining his rally.
Natembeya and his Democratic Action Party – Kenya (DAP‑K) quickly blamed political rivals for orchestrating this violence.
In particular, they pointed fingers at individuals and groups supposedly associated with Ford Kenya and Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, alleging that they funded and deployed the attackers. These accusations remain strong, though the accused side has denied involvement.
Local police responded to the incident, but reports suggest their presence was insufficient to prevent the chaos.
Security forces have promised to investigate the violence and identify the attackers. DAP‑K is calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to step in and ensure that future events are protected and that free, safe campaigning can continue.
This is the second time in a short period that Natembeya’s rallies have faced violent interference. Political analysts say these repeated disruptions highlight a growing risk of election-related violence in Western Kenya.
The recurring nature of the attacks raises serious concerns about the ability of authorities to guarantee security for political actors and ordinary citizens alike.
As investigations are launched, all eyes will be on how law enforcement responds. Natembeya’s camp wants those responsible held accountable.
Meanwhile, his political opponents — whether they respond in kind or push back with denials — will shape how the narrative develops. The people of Kabuchai and the wider electorate are now watching, wary of further escalation as the campaign intensifies.
