Kapsaret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, has come out strongly against Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, following controversial comments Gachagua made during his recent trip to the United States.
While addressing Kenyans living in the US, Gachagua asked those from the Mt Kenya region to stop sending remittances back to Kenya until a new administration takes over.
His statement has sparked outrage and criticism from both leaders and citizens, with MP Sudi branding the call as both reckless and dangerous.
Sudi accused Gachagua of inciting division and disrupting national unity at a time when the country is already experiencing high political tensions. “You want to tell people from the mountain to keep their money and wait until 2027? I think there’s something wrong with your thinking. How can you even say such a thing?” Sudi questioned sharply.
The outspoken MP warned that Gachagua’s remarks could negatively affect the country’s already struggling economy.
He added that such sentiments could destroy years of progress that the government and stakeholders have made in encouraging diaspora investments and building confidence among Kenyans living abroad.
Gachagua, on his part, defended his comments by blaming the strained relationship between President William Ruto and the Mt Kenya region for contributing to the country’s economic challenges.
According to him, the Kenya Kwanza administration cannot run effectively if people from Mt Kenya in the diaspora continue to hold back their financial support.
He described the withholding of remittances as a deliberate form of economic resistance, saying that the economic strength of the Mt Kenya diaspora has been consistently underestimated.
Gachagua stressed that the region has enough financial influence to impact national stability and should use that power wisely.
The former Deputy President, who was impeached in October, also claimed that Kenya Kwanza leaders had made several attempts to politically isolate him.
He accused them of trying to weaken his support in Mt Kenya by offering strategic appointments to his opponents and engaging in smear campaigns aimed at destroying his reputation.
“They tried to break my support, but the mountain has remained solid,” he said. “This government has failed to manage the economy. That’s why we’ve stopped sending money back home, and I encourage you to continue doing the same,” Gachagua added during one of his speeches in the US.
However, his statements have drawn fierce criticism back in Kenya, with many accusing him of using the Mt Kenya community for his own political interests. Critics argue that his remarks are not only divisive but also aimed at fueling ethnic tensions to further his ambitions.
Despite the growing opposition, Gachagua has remained unshaken. He continues to use his US tour to meet Kenyans living abroad, trying to gather more support from the diaspora as the country inches closer to the 2027 General Election.
Currently, he is in the middle of a two-month visit to the United States, where he has been holding a series of meetings with Kenyans abroad, pushing his message and laying the groundwork for his political comeback.
