Former Chief Justice David Maraga, who is in the race for Kenya’s presidency in the upcoming general elections, has shared an important update on the progress of his people-powered campaign.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, Maraga revealed that his technical team is currently upgrading the campaign’s digital infrastructure—an improvement that may result in occasional system outages.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the thousands of Kenyans who have already shown their support by contributing to the movement. Maraga explained that the rapid growth and overwhelming support from the public had made it necessary to enhance the platform’s capacity and security.
“Our tech team is actively working to boost both the strength and safety of our online campaign tools. This includes improvements to the real-time fundraising ticker across all digital platforms,” the statement noted.
He kindly asked Kenyans to bear with them as the team performs necessary upgrades. “As those familiar with digital systems know, occasional downtimes may happen during maintenance. We appreciate your patience and continued support,” he added.
In a photo taken during his address at State House on November 16, 2023, Maraga is seen speaking confidently—symbolizing his strong resolve to lead.
One of the major upgrades underway is the introduction of a new structure to manage the increasing number of volunteers. This framework will allow supporters from all walks of life to contribute their skills and talents in a more organised and impactful way.
Additionally, the tech team is developing a robust digital feedback system that will enable ordinary citizens to share their views and ideas on key policy areas highlighted in Maraga’s manifesto.
Not long ago, Maraga officially launched his digital fundraising platform, making it clear that his campaign would be funded by ordinary Kenyans—not wealthy elites. His aim is to give every citizen a chance to be part of the change they want to see in leadership.
In a recent media interview, Maraga stated that he would personally only contribute a humble Ksh1 million to Ksh2 million of his own money to the campaign, emphasizing transparency and accountability.
Just two days after the fundraising platform went live, he proudly shared that Kenyans—both locally and in the diaspora—had already raised Ksh500,000 within 48 hours. “I told you I don’t have a lot of money, and I’ve already made a public appeal,” he said.
“The fact that people in the diaspora are sending in dollars tells you something—Kenyans are hungry for real change.”
Maraga also renewed his pledge to reform Kenya’s electoral system so that aspiring leaders with limited financial means can fairly compete for office. He strongly criticized the current system for favouring the wealthy and locking out capable candidates simply because they don’t have deep pockets.
Now considered one of the front-runners in the race for the presidency, Maraga continues to champion a new way of doing politics—one that places the power back in the hands of the people.
