Irungu Nyakera Explains Gachagua’s Strategic Focus on Mt Kenya Politics
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Nairobi patron, Irungu Nyakera, has come out in defence of party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s frequent campaign activities in the Mount Kenya region.
Speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen, Nyakera clarified why Gachagua, the former Deputy President, has been largely absent from political engagements in other parts of the country.
According to Nyakera, Gachagua’s focus on Mount Kenya is not a sign of neglecting other regions, but rather a smart political strategy. He emphasized that Gachagua, being a prominent figure within the opposition alliance that includes leaders from across Kenya, is simply solidifying his support base before going national.
“It’s normal for leaders to concentrate their efforts where they enjoy the most backing, especially when gearing up for an election,” Nyakera explained.
“Each opposition leader has their own stronghold. Right now, everyone is strengthening their home base. But eventually, all regions in Kenya will be included in the broader vision of government.”
Gachagua’s political moves come as he aligns with other opposition heavyweights such as Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa. Despite being part of a united opposition front, Gachagua’s presence has been felt most in Mount Kenya, a region viewed as critical for any presidential hopeful.
Nyakera made it clear that this was a well-planned approach to build a solid foundation of support in his backyard before extending his reach nationwide.
When asked about Gachagua’s eligibility to run for president in the 2027 general election, Nyakera confidently stated that the former DP remains a viable candidate. He clarified that although there is an ongoing court case regarding Gachagua’s impeachment, it hasn’t yet disqualified him.
“As far as the law is concerned, the impeachment hasn’t taken effect because the legal process is still underway,” Nyakera said. “Unless the court rules otherwise, Gachagua—just like the rest of the opposition leaders—is fully within his rights to contest for the presidency.”
Nyakera also addressed the possibility of internal conflict within the opposition, given that several leaders in the alliance have expressed interest in running for the country’s top seat.
However, he was quick to point out that their shared mission—to remove the Kenya Kwanza government—remains the top priority, and unity is essential for that goal.
“Our mission is ‘Wantam’—we want them out,” Nyakera declared. “All these leaders live in Kenya and understand that any infighting will only sabotage the agenda. They may all express interest in running for president, but when the time comes, unity will take precedence over ambition.”
Meanwhile, Gachagua is currently on a two-month tour of the United States. Upon his return in September, he is expected to officially launch the DCP party—a process that had previously been delayed twice.
The opposition, which includes key political figures such as Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa, continues to build momentum in preparation for the 2027 general election. The upcoming months are expected to be critical in shaping Kenya’s political direction.
