Police officers in Kisumu County have arrested five suspects believed to be linked to a series of criminal activities, just hours after a shocking attack on a journalist in the Nyamasaria area.

The arrests were made on the morning of Monday, July 28, following an intelligence-led operation by officers from Kasagam Police Station.

The officers, acting swiftly on a tip-off, raided a suspected gang hideout situated along the banks of the Auji River, close to the Daraja Mbili area in Manyatta ‘B’ Sub-Location. The hideout had been under surveillance after reports of escalating insecurity in the region.

According to an official police report, the five individuals taken into custody are believed to be part of a gang responsible for several criminal acts, including violent robbery, especially within the Nyamasaria Estate.

During the early-morning raid, the police conducted thorough searches in the suspects’ residences, where they recovered several incriminating items—among them a Honda motorcycle suspected to be stolen, three machetes, a knife, and a toy gun commonly used to intimidate victims during robberies.

Following the successful operation, the suspects were taken to Kasagam Police Station, where they are being held as investigators process their cases ahead of their arraignment in court. Authorities confirmed that more arrests could follow as investigations continue.

Police praised members of the public for their timely cooperation, which made the raid possible. “We appreciate the support from the community.

This kind of partnership is crucial in achieving our goal of providing effective, accountable, and community-centered policing to build a safe and thriving society,” the police stated in a press briefing shortly after the arrests.

The development comes in the wake of increased concerns about insecurity in Kisumu’s outskirts, where residents have been living in fear due to a recent surge in violent crimes. Citizens have been calling on the government and law enforcement to step up efforts in restoring peace and safety.

One of the most recent and disturbing incidents involved a journalist working with Mediamax, who is currently recovering at the Aga Khan Hospital after being attacked by a violent gang at his home in Nyamasaria.

According to reports, the attack happened on Sunday, July 26, around 2 a.m., when a group of about ten thugs targeted his residence. Five of the attackers are said to have scaled the fence, forcibly broke into the house, and assaulted the journalist and his uncle.

The journalist, still nursing injuries, recalled the terrifying moment. “These knife cuts on my hands came from me trying to protect my head and chest,” he said, describing how he was slashed with sharp objects and beaten with a blunt item that left him with serious head injuries.

The gang reportedly used metal bars to force open the doors before storming inside and beating the occupants. After brutalizing the two men, the attackers made away with household valuables and electronics.

The arrests bring a ray of hope to residents of Nyamasaria and its surrounding areas, many of whom have been demanding decisive action from law enforcement. As the suspects await trial, police have vowed to intensify their patrols and intelligence efforts to curb further violence in Kisumu County.
