Gachagua Ally Claims Assassination Plot Before Arrest

A month after his dramatic arrest, Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has revealed new details about what he describes as a dangerous plot against his life.

Speaking on Friday, the legislator alleged that in July, there were plans to assassinate him — but the plot failed, leading to his arrest instead.

Mukunji claimed that after carrying out his own investigations, he discovered an elaborate plan to plant explosives in his vehicle and frame him as a national security threat.

According to him, the perpetrators allegedly intended to shoot at his car afterwards, accusing him of transporting explosives to harm the country.

“When I dug deeper into the matter, I found out there were plans to load my vehicle with explosives and then gun it down, making it look like I was out to harm the country,” the MP stated.

The legislator further alleged that when this plot failed, his opponents changed tactics. He claimed they resorted to arresting him and placing him in solitary confinement, with another plan to burn down the police cell while he was inside.

“When that plan didn’t work, they decided to put me in a cell alone, with the intention of burning it down with me inside,” he added.

Mukunji was arrested on Monday, July 7, 2024, over accusations of organising unrest during the Saba Saba protests.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed his arrest at the time. He was detained for three days before being released on a Ksh300,000 cash bail or an alternative surety bond of Ksh1 million.

The MP blamed his arrest on deep-rooted political rivalries at the grassroots level, suggesting that some local leaders are targeting him because of his growing political influence and ambitions.

As a staunch ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Mukunji has been among the most vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Following his release, he reaffirmed that he remains steadfast in defending the rights and interests of Kenyans, stressing that recent events have only strengthened his resolve to speak out against injustices.
