Sakaja Unveils Green Nairobi Company to Create Thousands of Jobs for City Residents
Nairobi residents are set to benefit from a major employment boost after Governor Johnson Sakaja announced the creation of the Green Nairobi Company, an independent body that will employ thousands of people and take charge of keeping the city clean.
The Governor made the announcement on Friday, August 8, while officially handing over 3,500 permanent and pensionable jobs to members of the Green Army — a team dedicated to maintaining Nairobi’s cleanliness.
Sakaja said the new company would be fully responsible for waste management and other cleanliness activities in the capital, operating separately from the County Government in the same way the Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company (Nairobi Water) manages water services.
According to the Governor, the Green Nairobi Company has already been formally registered with the Registrar of Companies. What remains is to secure funding and complete other logistical preparations before the company can start full operations.
“The company is already registered. We are now working on securing financing, and soon it will officially take over the responsibility of cleaning the city,” Sakaja explained.
Sakaja further revealed that Nairobi County has studied similar initiatives in other parts of the world, including South Africa, Kigali, and other cities known for high cleanliness standards.
He expressed confidence that this new approach would transform Nairobi’s environmental management and turn a new page in the county’s commitment to a clean and healthy city.
The Governor also emphasized the significance of the newly issued jobs, noting that the last recruitment in the environment sector happened in 1987. He called the move historic both in scale and impact.
“This is the largest recruitment of environmental personnel Nairobi has ever seen. Today marks a historic moment — you now have permanent and pensionable jobs after showing dedication and hard work in keeping our city clean,” Sakaja told the newly hired workers.
During the event, Green Nairobi County Executive Committee (CEC) Member Maureen Njeri applauded the Green Army for their commitment over the past two years. She said the Governor’s decision to give them permanent roles showed his trust in their work and urged them to maintain high standards.
“This is a vote of confidence in the work you have been doing. You are the custodians of Nairobi’s cleanliness and beauty. Let us now give our best to keep the city shining,” Njeri stated.
Although Sakaja has not yet shared all the details about the structure and operations of the new company, it is expected to be fully owned by the county government, with its own governance framework.
The plan is for the company to have a Chief Executive Officer, a professional board of directors, and access to independent financial resources to guarantee transparency, accountability, and efficiency.
When launched, the Green Nairobi Company will not only help solve the city’s cleanliness challenges but also provide stable jobs for many Nairobi residents, contributing to both environmental improvement and economic growth.
