Kericho Governor Erick Mutai Impeached Again
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has once again been impeached by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) after a tense and dramatic session on Friday, August 15, 2025. This is the second time he is facing impeachment in his tenure.
The motion to remove him from office was tabled by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony. It received massive support, with 33 MCAs voting in favour of the impeachment.
Out of the 47 MCAs who took part in the electronic voting, only 14 opposed the motion, meaning the two-thirds majority required was comfortably surpassed.
Immediately after the Speaker announced that Governor Mutai had been impeached, chaos broke out in the Assembly. Full details on what caused the commotion, and why the session turned chaotic, are still emerging.
This latest impeachment attempt comes after a similar effort in the past, where Governor Mutai survived after the Senate overturned the decision despite 31 MCAs having voted against him then.
During Friday’s special sitting, emotions ran high as leaders debated the accusations against the governor. The impeachment motion claimed that he had grossly violated the Constitution, abused his powers in office, and mismanaged public resources within the county.
Governor Mutai attended the session in person along with his legal team led by prominent lawyer Katwa Kigen. However, the team’s request for the vote to be done using a roll call was rejected by the Assembly.
Following the vote, the Speaker confirmed that the matter will now be forwarded to the Senate, which will review the charges against the governor. The Senate will give Governor Mutai a chance to defend himself.
If the Senate upholds the impeachment, Governor Mutai will be permanently removed from office. However, if the Senate does not agree with the Assembly’s decision, he will retain his position as governor.
This development has once again thrown Kericho County leadership into uncertainty, and residents are closely watching to see how the Senate will rule in the coming days.
