Calls for Kenya vs Tanzania Friendly Intensify After CHAN Heartbreak

Barely a day after both Kenya and Tanzania were eliminated from the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), fans and football lovers from both countries have intensified calls for a friendly football match between the two neighbours.

What initially began as harmless online banter quickly transformed into a heated debate and eventually a push for an actual football showdown. The idea has since gained support from notable personalities, sparking conversations on and off social media.

The Source of the Tensions

The rivalry between the two countries gained momentum after allegations emerged that Kenyans had bought tickets for a crucial match in Tanzania. According to reports, this prevented many Tanzanians from attending their national team’s quarter-final clash at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

This alleged ticket-buying incident attracted widespread attention online and turned into a matter of national pride. Tanzanian fans seized the moment to mock Kenya’s performance in the tournament. Kenyans, known for their witty and sharp online banter, quickly responded, escalating the situation further.

The rivalry only deepened after Kenya, who played earlier, were knocked out by Madagascar in a dramatic penalty shootout. Tanzanians celebrated Kenya’s elimination, not knowing they would soon suffer the same fate.

Days later, Tanzania crashed out of the competition as well after losing to Morocco — a side that Kenya had defeated during the group stages.

From Banter to a Proposed Friendly

As tensions flared and online banter intensified, Kenyan fans began calling for a friendly football match to settle the score once and for all. The idea is seen not only as a chance to determine regional bragging rights but also as a way to cool down the rising emotions between the two nations.

Renowned Kenyan international journalist Larry Madowo backed the suggestion, saying that a friendly would help ease tensions while giving both teams a chance to prove their superiority.

“We need a friendly match between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars to determine who the real champions are, and for respect to be restored.

If these neighbours had won against Morocco, I think we would have had to exit the East African Community because of all the abuse. Now, the only solution is a friendly match,” Larry Madowo said.

Kenyan digital strategist Dennis Itumbi also echoed the idea, proposing that the match could even be tied to national celebrations.

“As part of Jamhuri Day celebrations, I propose a friendly game between Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars, played both Home and Away. Our banter would finally translate into a good and competitive match,” Itumbi remarked.

Kenya’s Historic Run at CHAN

For Kenya, the CHAN tournament was both a historic milestone and a bittersweet moment. The Harambee Stars, driven by a passionate Kasarani crowd, were chasing a place in the continental semi-finals for the first time in 38 years.

After a tense 1-1 draw stretched into 120 minutes, the match went to penalties. In the nerve-racking shootout, Madagascar triumphed 4-3, with Toky Rakotondraibe scoring the decisive spot-kick after Kenya’s Alphonce Omija missed his chance.

Leaders Applaud Despite Exit

While the exit was painful for Kenyan fans, many leaders, including President William Ruto, praised the Harambee Stars for their determination, unity, and remarkable performances throughout the tournament.

Ruto described the team’s run as inspiring, reminding Kenyans that the squad had shown resilience and made the country proud despite the loss.

For both Kenya and Tanzania, the debate over who is truly superior in football remains unsettled. A friendly match now seems like the most fitting way to resolve the rivalry and turn the heated banter into an event that could unite rather than divide.
