Bunge la Mwananchi Elects New President at Jeevanjee

Bunge la Mwananchi, the grassroots “people’s parliament,” held internal leadership elections at Nairobi’s Jeevanjee Gardens today. Lawrence Oyugi, popularly known as Oyugi, was declared the new Bunge la Mwananchi president after a competitive race.

Other contenders who had been in the running included Joakim (Buke) Simiyu, CPA Robert Kiberenge, and CPA Hagai Thenye.

It is important to clarify that this was not Kenya’s national presidential election. The vote was an internal process to select leaders of a civil society movement that is well known for its open-air debates and citizen activism.

Over the years, Bunge la Mwananchi has become a platform where ordinary citizens express their views on governance, politics, and social justice.

The excitement around the election comes from the transparency of the process and the participation of multiple strong candidates. Supporters argue that this exercise strengthens the legitimacy of the movement and could help it gain more national recognition.

For context, Kenya’s next official presidential election under the IEBC is scheduled for August 2027. Any claims that “Kenyans finally elected their president” today are therefore misleading outside the Bunge la Mwananchi context.
