Two-time 800m World Championship gold medalist Billy Komintai Konchellah has secured a new government role after being named to the Board of the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK).
His appointment was part of a wide range of fresh appointments announced by different Cabinet Secretaries across various ministries.
Konchellah, who brought pride to Kenya with his world titles, was officially appointed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. He will serve in this position for the next three years, with his term starting on Friday, August 29.
His appointment comes at a crucial moment when Kenya has been facing global scrutiny due to a rising number of athletes being banned for doping-related offenses. His experience as a former athlete is expected to bring valuable insight to the agency’s fight against doping in sports.
In other changes, Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe appointed Winnie Beauttah to the Board of Directors of the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB). She will also serve a three-year term, taking over after the revocation of Nancy W. Kibugi’s appointment.
At the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy, CS Hassan Joho announced multiple appointments. Fridah Simba Joab Tumbo, Steve Biko Luseno, and Ahmed Abdirahman Elyass were named members of the Bandari Maritime Academy Board.
Additionally, Joho appointed Josiah Ochieng Obole and Omad Idd Boga to serve on the Board of the Kenya Fisheries Service.
Education CS Julius Migos also made key appointments to the Board of Trustees of the President’s Award. He named Emma Velma Achieng Maumo and Shimoy Khalif Jilaow as new members who will oversee the youth-focused program.
Meanwhile, Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku appointed Dalmas Philip Odero as the Chairperson of the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) Council. Ruku further named John Mutisya Mwanzia and Beatrice Cherotich Bii to serve as members of the same council, strengthening leadership in the human resource sector.
In the Ministry of Trade, CS Lee Kinyanjui appointed three new members to the Board of the Kenya Trade Remedies Agency. The new appointees are Edward Wanjala, Kirui David Kibett, and Margaret Gaiteria, who will help guide the agency’s operations in safeguarding trade interests.
Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development CS Wyckliffe Oparanya also made an appointment.
He named Millie Musumba to the Uwezo Fund Oversight Board, where she will serve a three-year term aimed at supporting community-based development projects and youth empowerment initiatives.
Security Concerns in Tana River
Away from boardroom changes, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen extended the government’s declaration that certain areas in Tana River County remain security-disturbed and dangerous. The declaration, which was first made on June 18, will now continue for another 60 days.
The affected areas include Madogo, Areri, Saka, Sala, Mororo, and Mbalambala. In Tana North Sub-County, the security-affected regions are Hirimani, Hosingo, Dukanotu, Chewele, Nanighi, and Bura locations.
According to the notice, the extension can be withdrawn or prolonged further depending on the security situation, with directives to be issued through official gazette notices.
These latest appointments and security measures highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to reorganize leadership in key state agencies while also addressing challenges in regions affected by insecurity.
The reshuffle across ministries signals a broader strategy by the Cabinet Secretaries to strengthen institutions, restore accountability, and improve service delivery.
