Fred Matiang’i Takes on President Ruto in Nyamira, Declares He’s Ready for 2027

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has come out strongly against President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of corruption, poor leadership, and neglect of ordinary citizens.

Speaking at a burial in Kitutu Masaba, Nyamira County, Matiang’i said the current government has failed to meet the expectations of Kenyans and is instead busy looting public resources.

He vowed that he is ready to take up national leadership in 2027, promising to deliver transformative governance that will restore accountability and order.

Matiang’i Criticises Ruto’s Government

While addressing mourners, Matiang’i expressed disappointment at what he described as widespread theft in government.

He claimed that corruption has become the order of the day under Ruto’s administration, pointing to the alleged loss of KSh 24 billion through the Social Health Authority (SHA). According to him, money meant to improve healthcare for Kenyans has instead disappeared into private hands.

Matiang’i also condemned the government’s failure to disburse capitation funds to schools. Drawing from his own experience as a former Education Cabinet Secretary, he explained the gravity of the situation. “I spoke to four principals this morning, and all of them confirmed they had not received any funds.

How are schools supposed to feed, manage, and teach our children without money? These are the realities that ordinary families are facing,” he said.

The former CS accused top government officials of lying to the public, even on matters that Kenyans can clearly see for themselves.

He painted a picture of a government that has abandoned development in favor of theft, saying, “It feels like Kenya was invaded by looters in 2022. Every day we wake up to new stories of corruption. What they cannot steal, they sell.”

Warning Against Handouts Politics

Matiang’i warned that those stealing from public coffers are the same individuals who travel in helicopters across the country, dishing out small amounts of money disguised as empowerment programs. He said this culture of handouts is dangerous and risks ruining the country’s future.

“We are not asking for anything extra; all we want is development and peace. Development is not a favor — it is our right because we pay taxes. Kenyans deserve better leadership,” Matiang’i said, urging citizens to demand accountability.

Matiang’i Positions Himself for 2027

Turning to his own political ambitions, Matiang’i assured Kenyans that he is ready to take on the presidency in 2027. He asked the public to judge him based on his past service in government, noting that he delivered results whenever he was assigned responsibility.

During his tenure as Education, ICT, and Interior CS, Matiang’i said he always worked with efficiency, transparency, and integrity. “We have worked with you before, and I want to assure you that I am prepared to lead this country, even if it were today.

Kenya needs order, discipline, and proper management, and I am ready to provide that,” he declared.

Machogu Backs Matiang’i’s Presidential Bid

In a surprising show of support, former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu also spoke during the same event and declared that he would rally behind Matiang’i in the 2027 elections.

Machogu, who previously served in Ruto’s government, said he would use his political and social networks to campaign for Matiang’i.

He accused President Ruto of failing to fulfill promises made to the Gusii community during the 2022 campaigns. According to Machogu, pledges for projects such as factories, dams, and industrial parks remain unfulfilled. He urged the community not to repeat the mistake of supporting leaders who do not deliver.

“Let us unite behind one of our own, Fred Matiang’i, who has shown through his past record that he can deliver. We cannot afford to be taken for granted again,” Machogu told mourners in Nyamira.

A New Political Battlefront

Matiang’i’s remarks have now opened a fresh political front in Nyamira and the wider Gusii region. His attack on the Ruto government, coupled with Machogu’s endorsement, signals the beginning of what could be a heated campaign season ahead of 2027.

The former CS positioned himself as a reformist leader ready to fight corruption and bring discipline in governance, while also appealing to Kenyans to judge him by his track record.

Whether Kenyans will embrace Matiang’i as a serious contender remains to be seen, but his bold statements in Nyamira have already set the stage for a fierce political contest.
