A Kenyan teacher has brought pride to the country after being recognized as Africa’s best teacher.

Jepkosgei Chemoiwa, a Mathematics and Physics teacher from Emining Boys High School in Mogotio, Baringo County, has won the prestigious African Union (AU) Continental Teacher Prize, an award supported by UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building.

Chemoiwa clinched the continental award after beating numerous other nominees from across Africa.

The annual prize is designed to honour outstanding teachers who not only deliver academic excellence but also inspire their students, uplift fellow educators, uphold strong moral values, and positively impact their schools and communities.

With a teaching career spanning 15 years, Chemoiwa has dedicated her life to shaping young minds since graduating from Egerton University.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 10, she revealed that her nomination came as a surprise, having been put forward by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) earlier this year.

According to her, the award largely recognized her pioneering efforts in promoting online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

At a time when students in remote parts of Baringo risked missing out on education, Chemoiwa worked tirelessly to ensure learning continued despite limited resources.

“Up to this point, I thank God for this recognition. It is such a great honour that I never imagined would come my way. When I got the call from TSC in May saying I had been nominated, I couldn’t believe it,” Chemoiwa said with humility.

Her victory has sparked joy and pride within her school community.

The Emining Boys High School administration, teachers, and students praised her for her selfless dedication, describing her as an inspiration not only to Kenyan teachers but to educators across Africa.

“She is fully committed and passionate about her work. Her dedication has put our school on the global map,” one of her colleagues noted.

Beyond her academic role, Chemoiwa is admired for her close connection with learners, her willingness to mentor fellow teachers, and her unwavering commitment to teaching as a calling rather than just a profession.

Chemoiwa will officially be presented with the award at a grand ceremony set to take place next month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.

The recognition not only celebrates her individual efforts but also shines a spotlight on Kenya’s teaching fraternity, proving that the country has educators who can compete and excel on the global stage.
