George Ruto’s Luxury Matatu “Mood” Involved in Accident in Eldoret
George Ruto’s well-known matatu, famously branded Mood, was on Sunday morning involved in a road accident in Eldoret after a 14-seater matatu rammed into it from behind.
The luxurious vehicle, which is estimated to be worth Ksh14 million, had just arrived in the town for the much-anticipated homecoming event at Maili Tisa Park and Chill when the incident occurred.
The flashy matatu was meant to be one of the highlights of the celebrations before the unexpected accident disrupted the moment.
Images obtained by Newshub.co.ke show visible damage to Mood, with a dent at the back where the smaller matatu collided with it. Police officers had already reported to the scene shortly after the accident was reported.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were recorded at the time of publishing, offering relief to fans and passengers who had gathered around the vehicle.
Since its launch in July, Mood has become a trending sensation across the country, especially in Nairobi’s matatu culture. The luxury matatu has not only transported commuters but also taken part in major entertainment events, quickly making a name for itself as one of the most stylish and unique vehicles in Kenya’s public transport sector.
Back on July 18, George Ruto organized a grand launch for Mood at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The launch began with prayers and the symbolic anointing of the matatu before it transformed into a youth-centered entertainment concert that drew huge crowds.
Later that day, the Nairobi Central Business District came to a standstill as the luxury matatu drove through the city streets, attracting the attention of excited onlookers.
However, just a few days after its big debut, by July 21, Mood had already been taken to the garage after sustaining damage during its official unveiling.
This was confirmed through an update posted on the matatu’s social media pages, where a short video showed the vehicle undergoing repairs. The caption read: “Mood is currently out for touch-ups. We will be back shortly.”
What makes Mood stand out from regular matatus is its unique design and luxury features that are rarely seen in Kenyan public transport.
The matatu is fitted with a 65-inch TV screen, a live DJ mixing deck for entertainment, solar panels for power efficiency, and imported high-end bucket seats from China.
Unlike the usual 32-seater layout, Mood has been customized into a 25-seater format with a 2-by-1 seating arrangement to give passengers more space and comfort.
This accident marks another unexpected challenge in the journey of George Ruto’s iconic matatu, which continues to draw attention both for its innovation and for the cultural buzz it has brought to Kenya’s vibrant matatu industry.
