Babu Owino Addresses Video Showing Him Attacking Raila

Babu Owino Responds to Doctored Video Claiming He Attacked Raila

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has come out strongly to defend himself after a controversial video surfaced online, appearing to show him attacking his party leader and former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

The youthful legislator dismissed the clip as fake and misleading, insisting that it had been tampered with by his political rivals to create a false impression about his loyalty to Raila.

Babu Shares Original Video

On Saturday evening, Babu Owino took to his social media pages to set the record straight. He uploaded what he termed as the full and unedited version of the speech, which was captured during a 2024 rally in Suna East Constituency.

The rally was part of Raila’s campaign trail as he sought support for his bid to become the next African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson.

According to Owino, the short clip that went viral had been carefully edited. Sections of his remarks, which were originally directed at President William Ruto, were cut and rearranged to appear as if they were meant for Raila Odinga.

What Babu Actually Said

In the original footage, Owino openly praised Raila and encouraged him to keep standing up for ordinary Kenyans, particularly in the fight against heavy taxation on basic commodities. He told Raila:

“Baba, before you go to AU, please organise one more protest so we finish this man (Ruto).”

The doctored version, however, twisted his words. All the negative comments about Ruto were edited in a way that made it seem as if Owino was hurling the insults at Raila himself.

This move, he said, was a clear attempt to drive a wedge between him and the ODM leader, despite his consistent support for Raila’s leadership.

Continued Criticism of Ruto Government

Babu Owino has, for months, remained one of the most vocal critics of President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

He has openly rejected government policies he believes burden ordinary citizens, even after the signing of the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The MoU was intended to foster collaboration between the two sides for the sake of national unity and development.

Still, Owino has stood firm in his position, maintaining that the government must be held accountable.

Importantly, he has never made public remarks attacking Raila, showing his loyalty to the ODM party leader even when they have held different views about how to engage the government.

Political Future and Kenya Moja Movement

In recent months, the Embakasi East MP has been working closely with other young parliamentarians under the banner of the Kenya Moja movement.

This group, which pushes for stronger accountability in government and better representation of the people, has been gaining attention in the political scene.

There is also growing speculation that Babu Owino could be eyeing a bigger political position, with Nairobi Governor being one of the seats linked to him.

Alongside him in the Kenya Moja movement is Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, another outspoken ODM figure.

Sifuna, who doubles up as the Secretary General of ODM, has equally maintained his tough stance against the Ruto administration, even as his party engages the ruling coalition in talks.

By distancing himself from the misleading video, Owino sought to assure Raila’s supporters and the wider public that he remains firmly loyal to the ODM leader and continues to stand by him in both political and personal battles.
