A well-known businessman from Makueni County, Dennis Kasyoki, tragically lost his life on Monday morning, September 22, following a deadly road accident along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The crash occurred in the Athi River area of Machakos County after Kasyoki’s double-cabin pickup collided with a trailer that was transporting goods from Mombasa on its way to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
How the Accident Happened
Police reports indicate that the businessman had attempted to overtake the trailer but suddenly swerved back into his lane.
This move left the heavy vehicle with little room to adjust, leading to the trailer ramming into the pickup from behind. The force of the impact caused the container on the trailer to tip over, crashing directly onto the businessman’s vehicle and flattening the driver’s side.
Witnesses and photos seen by Newshub.co.ke revealed the horrifying scene, showing the crushed car trapped under the weight of the massive container.
Sadly, Kasyoki died instantly at the site of the accident. Another passenger who was in the vehicle survived the impact but sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby health facility for urgent treatment.
Emergency Response and Traffic Disruption
Following the tragic incident, police officers, security personnel, and emergency rescue teams quickly moved to the scene. They secured the area, helped the injured, and later organized the towing of both the trailer and the mangled vehicle to clear the road.
For hours, traffic along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway was disrupted, with vehicles moving slowly as the wreckage was being cleared.
The accident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists on major Kenyan highways, where heavy commercial vehicles and private cars share limited road space.
Rising Cases of Road Tragedies
This latest accident comes only a day after another deadly crash in Nairobi claimed the life of a motorist along Outering Road. In that case, the driver lost control of his car while on an elevated section of the service lane. The vehicle veered off the road, plunging several metres down and landing upside down.
Eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene said the driver died instantly, though police and emergency officials are yet to release a formal statement confirming the details.
“They just rolled over from up there, and you can see the car is upside down. The driver did not survive—everything came to a stop,” one witness emotionally recounted.
Photos and videos circulating on social media platforms showed the vehicle completely overturned, with its roof and upper bodywork badly destroyed from the crash impact.
A Worrying Trend
The two accidents, occurring barely 24 hours apart, have sparked renewed concern over the increasing number of fatal road crashes in the country.
Many Kenyans continue to call for stricter road safety measures, including better driver training, road surveillance, and enforcement of traffic rules to reduce such tragedies.
