Breaking: MCAs Suspended After Being Caught on CCTV Stoning Governor’s Office

The Kericho County Assembly has suspended four Members of County Assembly (MCAs) after CCTV footage allegedly captured them stoning and vandalising the governor’s office.

The incident is said to have happened on August 15, during the heated impeachment process against Governor Eric Mutai. Those suspended include Kapsaos Ward MCA Paul Bii, alongside nominated MCAs Irene Chebet, Noela Opile, and Fancy Korir.

According to the CCTV recordings, the leaders were seen hurling stones and damaging property at the governor’s office, which is located just about 500 meters from the county assembly chambers. The footage also showed them breaking windows and destroying other property within the county assembly building during the chaos.

Kericho County Assembly Majority Leader, Philip Rono, confirmed that the disciplinary action was taken to address misconduct.

He said the four MCAs had been barred from attending assembly proceedings for 90 days. In addition, other members involved in the chaos were instructed to issue formal apologies before the assembly’s Powers and Privileges Committee.

“Today, the committee on powers finalised its report on disciplinary action against the members. About four of them have been suspended for 90 days, meaning they are not allowed to carry out the functions of the county assembly during that period,” Rono explained.

He further criticised the behaviour of the suspended MCAs, noting, “These members threw stones and destroyed property belonging to the county assembly. Such conduct does not reflect good leadership and cannot be tolerated.”

Governor Mutai Survives Impeachment

The stoning incident came in the middle of a tense political season in Kericho County. The impeachment motion against Governor Mutai had been tabled on August 6, 2025, with accusations ranging from gross misconduct, misuse of office, and violations of the constitution and other laws.

After the county assembly passed the motion, the matter was escalated to the Senate, setting the stage for a political showdown in Nairobi. The Senate held a dramatic impeachment trial on August 29, where the governor’s fate drew national attention.

Despite strong arguments from some MCAs, the Senate eventually dismissed the impeachment bid. A total of 25 senators voted to save Governor Mutai, concluding that the charges brought forward by the county assembly did not meet the legal threshold required for his removal from office.

The rejection of the impeachment meant that Governor Mutai retained his seat, though the political drama in Kericho has continued to expose deep divisions within the county’s leadership.
