Breaking: County Governor Impeached

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Impeached by County Assembly

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has officially been impeached after members of the County Assembly voted to remove him from office.

The decision comes after a fresh push by the MCAs, who cited serious accusations including gross misconduct, abuse of office, and questionable appointments within his administration.

This marks the third attempt to oust him, highlighting the deep political divisions that have continued to grow inside the County Assembly.

The latest impeachment motion was introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, who also serves as the Majority Leader.

During the vote, 19 out of 31 MCAs supported the motion to impeach Governor Nyaribo, while four members chose to abstain.

With this vote, the County Assembly has formally approved his removal, and the process now advances to the Senate for further determination.

Previous Attempts to Remove Him

This is not the first time Governor Nyaribo has faced removal attempts. In September last year, he narrowly survived impeachment by just one vote. In that session, 34 MCAs were present—22 voted to remove him, 12 opposed the move, and no one abstained.

Even earlier, in September 2023, he escaped another impeachment attempt after 18 MCAs voted against the motion. Sixteen members supported his removal, but they failed to reach the two-thirds threshold required for impeachment to succeed. These repeated efforts show long-standing tensions and disagreements between the governor and the county leadership.

EACC Investigation Intensifies Pressure

On top of the political battle, Governor Nyaribo is also facing investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). The agency is probing allegations of corruption and misuse of office, adding another layer of pressure on the county boss.

Just last month, EACC officers raided the governor’s homes and offices, accusing him of involvement in a corruption scheme tied to a Ksh382 million irregular tender.

The raid, conducted on the morning of October 29, also targeted several senior county officials believed to be connected to the questionable contract. With ongoing investigations, Nyaribo’s leadership continues to face major scrutiny.

What Happens Next at the Senate

According to Kenyan law, once MCAs impeach a governor, the matter must be forwarded to the Senate for review.

The Speaker of the County Assembly forwards the impeachment resolution together with supporting documents to the Senate, which is tasked with examining the case in detail.

The Senate can either debate the matter as a full house or appoint a special committee to investigate the allegations.

This committee reviews evidence, listens to the governor’s defence, and considers submissions from both the MCAs and those supporting the governor. After the investigations, the committee prepares a report and presents it to the full Senate for debate.

To fully remove a governor from office, at least two-thirds of all senators must vote in favour of the impeachment. Until the Senate makes this final decision, Governor Nyaribo technically remains in office, although under heavy political and legal pressure.

Possible Outcomes After the Senate Decision

If the Senate upholds the impeachment, the deputy governor will automatically take over and serve as governor for the rest of the term. However, the law also gives Nyaribo the option to challenge the impeachment in court.

He can argue that proper procedures were not followed or that his constitutional rights were violated. Such a court case could delay the final outcome or even overturn the Senate’s decision depending on the ruling.

Governor Nyaribo now faces a critical moment as he battles both political opposition and corruption investigations. The Senate’s next move—and possibly the courts—will determine his future and the leadership direction of Nyamira County.
